there's also a main difference between the coolers... this new revision brins a PWM fan ... while the reference isn't

To be fair, I haven't heard a reference 6970 in person. Fan loudness is such a subjective thing. I must be picky because I find scythe gt ap-15s annoying as case fans when they're on full. I have a hard time believing that you could live with case fans that are louder than any 6970 reference type cooler when running harder than idle speed.

I did a little benchmarking last night. I pushed the core to 960 on stock voltage and was able to run gpu tool stability check for several minutes with no artifacting. I also ran through unigine heaven at standard dx11 settings with no problems. Max temp was 61 with the fan at 50%. I then pushed the memory to 1475 and ran gpu tool for a few minutes. Max temp was 62. I'm going to push it more this weekend with longer term testing and gaming. Any recommendations on how to test?

Played SCII for about two hours non-stop tonight with no issues. Core 960 Memory 1475 on stock voltage. Max temp was 56. Ambient temp was 22. I know that SCII is not nearly as demanding as newer games, but that seems pretty good so far.

I then upped the core to 970, mem stayed at 1475 and ran GPU Tool for 10 minutes at stock voltage.

Validation: http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/w599u/

Nothing stellar so far, but I'll keep working on it this weekend as I have time.

So... what the hell is up with this new reference design ? Maybe this was one shot of an early stage and at the end they decided to remove 1 of the inductors because it wasn't need it and it would lower the price?

Really, can't understand :x
Pedros, AMD had the original design laid out waiting for manufacturing when TI announced their shortage. AMD then switched to the Volterra at the last minute to make it in time for X-mas. This gave them more time to tweak the original reference design which was meant to use the delayed TI parts.

I'm just restating what we know. My guess is that those extra months allowed AMD to further tweak their design giving us what we see now in the current revised boards. It's my guess that they streamlined/improved the process a bit. Some of the early revisions like the 6950 PCS++ which used the revised 6970 board, had some amazing overclocks.

Breen... 970Mhz on default voltage is really good... why you say it's nothing stellar?

TSM... yeah thanks for the info!

Guess that with the new TI DrMos are really good then

I'm still kind of new to overclocking, especially videocards. I see so many people with core of 1000 showing in their sigs. I guess maybe they're pumping up the voltage? Hopefully, these clocks will hold up when I run some more serious stuff for longer periods of time. Do you guys have any suggestions for stability testing? I've read some threads, but there's so much info out there. Should I use furmark, kombustor, etc.? What kind of settings?

TSM, thanks for being a FUDbuster. I was reading a lot of your posts in the XFX thread. +rep

Kcuestag, have you really pushed your card beyond 950 yet?

Pedros, I can't wait to see your results once you get those cards under water!
