Can you install Windows using a USB external DVD/RW?

Hey guys,

As the title states, can you install Windows using a USB external DVD/RW, this one to be exact.

I don't want to run into any issues with my new build (see signature), I'm going to be using an SSD & HDD:

Crucial C300 64gb
Western Digital 6GB/s Sata III 1TB

What is the best way to set these up to run optimally? I'm quite experienced with this, but I've heard you can do much more with SSD's these days.

I've seen some registry edits that apparently improve performance, and how the two drives can work together! My C300 is almost full, I have 6gb left, and it's currently in my old system, so I should probably reformat the drive, fresh install of windows on the C300, and store all the games on the 1TB HDD, maybe putting the MMORPG's on the SSD to improve loading times.

Can anyone suggest the best possible way to set this up? I have so many ideas rolling around in my head it's hard to filter through the rubbish haha!

As always any advice is greatly appreciated!

Peace.

You should, just configure your bios to boot from a USB device.

Yeah, I understand that, but will it be 100% fine, will it make any difference? I've never used an external drive before, the only reason I got one was because I hate the cheap plastic look of internal ones, ruining a £140 case design. LOL

Sure it'll be fine, and no it won't make any difference (well only max read speed may vary if it's only powered by 2 usb connectors).
I haven't owned internal cd/dvd-rw for like 2 years now and have done numerous installs both on my sigrig and netbook.

Yes you can install from external Drive. I do it all the time. Or you can install by USB. It's the same thing

itll befine. dont even have to change anythign in your bios. simply on boot select boot device, and either usb device, cd/dvd device, or even usb dvd drive depending on how your cmos recognizes the drive. as long as your mobo is made within the last 7 years or so it can recognize usb drives.

Agreed, I have an HP Mini 1000, Alienware M11x, and a couple headless servers. None of them have CD/DVD drives and I've used an ASUS USB external DVD drive to install Windows to all of them.

Agreed. Not easy to do but it's very much possible

Well...it is, kind of. If your very experienced with your BIOS then you will find it to be simple to do.
