Yeah, it's in the guest room... which is now really the server room. Was originally planning to setup in the garage, but it's too dusty.

it's mostly for work, which is somewhat of a hobby too... i'm an IT consultant for some large businesses, the DoD, and a few smaller companies. Some of the stuff in the rack is part of my lab where I can test things for my clients. Some of it runs several virtual machines I use to run my business. There are a few virtual machines in there for some of the guys on my team for them to "play or learn" with... call it professional development ;-). The Sun Microsystem gear is mostly legacy... I'm an old school Unix/Linux geek... There's also an old Alpha 21164a machine in the back behind the rack; I need to get it on a shelf.

I got to this thread really late, so I'm reading backwards here... if you're still looking for a gigabit switch, check out Dell's PowerConnect 2716.. it's only 16 ports, but it is fanless and I'm able to pump 120MBytes+/sec through those ports... they are cheap, quiet, low heat/power, and perform really well. the 24 port version unfortunately adds a fan... but if the ambient is cool enough, maybe you can just remove the fan. oh, and they support jumbo frames, port aggregation, port mirroring, and other features you would not expect from a 16 port gigabit for $80 used/refurb.
