[SmartPlanet] Recharge an electric car without plugging in - Page 2

The recharge time is what makes electric cars impractical to me. You can't simply stop and fill'er up like you can with fuel. Road trips are simply out of the question with electric cars. Find a battery that can recharge in under 5 minutes and I'll be interested.

Smart biofuels are still the future in my opinion. Algae biodiesel and cellulose ethanol FTW.

I love road trips, and with the TSA and its crotch grabbing, 4th amendment violating search tactics I imagine I'm going to be driving lots more places instead of flying now. I refuse to go through the scanners. The TSA said there is a 1 in 6000 chance of it causing cancer. So that only means that a few dozen people a day get cancer from the scanners... as if that is acceptable....

The problem with biofuels is that it often takes just as much gas to create as would have been used if it had been put into a car directly :/
I once saw a documentary on a car powered by compressed air I believe, but that technology is still a fairly long way from being perfected.

I don't know, I always thought that all our problems would be solved if the body of the car was actually just a big solar panel, but maybe that's just me

The main problem with compressed air is storage. If the storage container fails, you have a bomb on hand (despite what you see in movies, this is not the case with conventional gasoline storage tanks). Also it's bulky.

I know, I never said it was a viable alternative, I was just mentioning it in passing

I don't see too much of a future for electric cars for long commutes. You guys might be interested in this too:http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-n...eaper-than-oil

The real reason we still use fuel combustion engines is the energy density of gasoline. It's impossible to fit that much energy into a battery at the moment, let alone recharge it. But a fuel combustion engine is only like 30% efficient at turning fuel into mechanical energy...

Thats a problem you'll always have with energy storage. If the energy gets away too fast, bad stuff happens...

If you want a battery that can fit a lot, the Zinc Matrix is better than a Lithium Ion battery. Holds more when the same size as Li-ion, no leak due to temp, but it's really small right now. They need to develop a bigger one.

Not to turn this into an airport security topic but...

A) Every airport I've been to so far has the choice of going through the new scanners or the old metal detectors and such.

B) Everybody complains about how airport security sucks when there's a terrorist attack or something, but then when they try to up security, people complain about that. Make up your minds.
