If you need to get access to the disk, download Hiren's Boot CD or Ultimate Boot CD (both free) and you can copy the files off the drive to an external drive or USB stick.

I wiped out one of these a couple weekends ago.

Your icons aren't missing... your entire user profile has been set to "hidden." That's why half your desktop is gone too.

You'll have to show all files and folders in control panel all icons > folder options to see it. Then look in C:\\Users and see your username grayed out. Right click, properties, and unhide it. This is kind of a mess because of the Appdata folder that supposed to be hidden.

Sometimes it'll set your profile to read-only at the same time to really tick you off.

Before fighting that though be sure you get that virus out!

Could you walk me through how to make my profile visible so I can see my folders.

one of the other things that you might want to make sure you don't have (which is why i recommend a full reinstall for those who don't know what they are doing) is a rootkit.

hang on there -

Boot into safe mode (F8 on startup)

Run MBAM update, then quick scan. then download and install Microsoft Security Essentials.

Boot up back into normal mode and virus scan again.

check IE for proxies the virus may have set up, and restore these back to defaults.

put in windows disk and keep pressing F8 until you get to the menu.
then click repair windows.

if this doesn't work highlight the system 32 folder and delete it
