PSU and heat question

Thread Starter
So Ive been asking a bit about my current PSU, which when playing Crysis2 gets LOUD.

I've had a lot of great suggestions for new PSU's to buy, but one thing troubles me- my nice pretty new case.

There really isn't a lot of room over the top of the PSU for the fan to blow, like 3/4 of an inch. So I'm concerned that ANY PSU I get will overheat in there, and I will have spent money for nothing.

What do the experts here think? If I get a more powerful PSU will it have to work less and therefore be cooler? Or if I get one that is just better quality? I thought when I bought this one that it was good quality too, 2 years ago. I am not on a budget for this.

My priorities are QUIET and MODULAR.

Am I going to run into these problems with any PSU or is it totally doable to find one that is quiet in my case at full load? I have 2 extra hard drives and all the fans in the case in addition to the system in my siggie if that is useful...

How do you have your PSU mounted? If its above the motherboard then you should have it mounted with the fan facing down. Most PSU fans pull air into the PSU and push it out the back of the case. It's also unlikely your PSU is going to overheat especially with just single 580 and 2500k. Combined maximum draw for those two shouldn't exceed 500w which is well within the specs of your 750w PSU.

Mount it upside down.

I have it mounted with the fan up- in the mini p180 its at the very bottom of the case, with a couple of 1mm rubber feet keeping it off the metal. So the only place it can blow air is on top- if I flip it upside down the fan wouldnt be able to suck any air at all.

@Klue22- if its getting that hot that it has to blow like a hurricane, does that perhaps mean it is not good anymore or on the way out?

Nope, my TX850 gets the same way. As the power draw increases the amount of energy that's wasted as heat increases. This happens on all PSUs. Also your fan is probably sucking air into the power supply, I've never seen one that blew air out into the case.
