Another Custom Router thread

I just recently got done turning an old Celeron Dell into a pfsense router for my dad's business and now I want one at the house. Imjelly

Well I'm kind of in a dilemma I've got an old PIII system laying around in a cardboard box with an old old old Intel NIC.

Meaning I would need to buy another NIC or possibly two. Also me being an idiot I gutted the machine out of the Gateway case it came in and tossed the case :| so now there's no case for it either. It does have enough memory to run linux distros and such so I know it can handle pfsense.

At this point I can't decide whether to use the old PIII or do an Alix build. I'm not dead set on just those two options. I've been looking around at older threads and I've seen mITX builds as an alternative also. But I want to keep this around $200 or less.

Currently I'm running a WRT54G w/ Tomato so don't really need a new router recommended.

Suggestions? Builds? Comments?

Give it a shot?
Even an old P3 with 10/100 NICS can handle what you need.
What kind of bandwidth package do you have?

For reference the router I'm using has a 50 Mhz CPU and handles our 6 mbps DSL without problems.

I have a 12Mbps down 1 Mbps up package with that speedboost crud right now. Well I'll have to find a cheap case or keep it in a box I suppose.

Well I went ahead and setup the old PIII with pfsense. Here's the specs on the machine

Intel Pentium III 450 Mhz
192 MB Memory
20GB Western Digital 7200RPM HDD
Generic PSU 300 Watts - LOL
Intel NIC PCI + Linksys EtherFast NIC PCI

I fired up the WEBGUI and it's already using 31% memory. I'll be testing out the router on the network once I find a nice little cardboard box to fit all this PCB mess into. Although It's fairly responsive although it's a bit of an old machine I'm a bit skeptic we'll see how it goes.

how about an uber cheap case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811154095

might as well right?

I'm using a POS Pentium 3 compaq they were throwing away at work as my pfsense box. Next I turned my WRT54G into a wap, but eventually replaced it with a wireless n 300mbps router. These diy routers are awesome, I don't think I could ever think of going back to the flimsy standalone routers.

Thanks for the recommendation, I think this weekend I'm gonna run to Microcenter and get a cheapy case from there. Just didn't have time this weekend :|. I know exactly what you mean though I can't wait to replace the WRT54G with this! TBH I'm headed down the same road you are O_O. I'll eventually replace the WRT54G with a better AP or something.

Off Topic: I used to have that same motherboard how's it holding up for ya??
