How long do high end cards last?

Thread Starter
I wonder, how long do high end cards last? I wonder how long my 470 will last, It Idles around 36-40C and loads around 55-65C (It all depends on the case temp). Also, I'm always @ stock clocks, I only overclock when benchmarking, which I rarely do. The most highest core temperature I got was 90C @ 1.1v but that was just in a matter of seconds.

Thanks

It is quite impossible to say with any certainty. It is sort of like saying how long will my car last, or how long will my dog live. It depends.

There are a lot of older graphic cards still running fine in many computers. I have a 7800GTX that has the reference cooler, and it still plays HL2 like a champ.

Most likely you will run into the issue that your GTX 470 will be to slow to run newer games, before it ends up having a hardware failure.

They can last between 5-6 years to 2 weeks.
Really depends on the card.
Buf if you treat them well, they will last several years.

My 280 is still hopping along, been undervolted and stock clocked 98% of the time though. My brother has a 6600gt that still works fine - needs a clean every so often though.

How long does a cheese last?

Hehe. Overvolting etc. can reduce the lifespan, but honestly I think its like smoking; You know you're going to die a BIT before, but not necessarily THAT much quicker, so you do it anyways.

My oldest working 'high end' card is a 6800 Ultra (~ 7 years old)
Other oldies are a 7800GT and an 8800GTX.

I suppose if there is no hidden defect to begin with and if you do regular maintenance, it can last a long long time.
my previous GTX295 and the HD4870x2's before that, just died after a month...this GTX295 is still perfect after almost 2 year
it's OC'ed and has higher voltages set, and is busy with folding@home almost 24/7.
so...it all depends on luck lol

I think it entirely depends on what technological developments/breakthroughs take place (if any). Or rather; what these big manufacturer's with their R&D want to release.

I think it's safe to assume companies like Intel, AMD, Nvidia, release things in frequent steps to maximize profit then just throwing out their biggest and greatest ideas.

Call me paranoid, but i think thats how the market works - It's all business, after all.

I remember the whole "Future proof" thing, and because of the above i think it's impossible to ever future proof a computer.

This is the reason why i only buy hardware i consider reasonably priced - I think it's all a waste of money otherwise. No more super-de-duper high end for me (it's overrated anyways, and never fully utilized unless you like watching benchmarks)

I still have a 7350 LE that I used for a good amount of time and it never got messed up on me.
But then again my GTX 480 lasted 3 months then needed a new one from RMA, now its half a year old.

Yes! I have a 6800 GTO (unlocked to GT) from that time period. I abused that card like crazy. Unlocked the shaders (and left them open despite the fact that they didn't pass the error checker), OC'd it like crazy, NEVER cleaned it even once.

And it's still puttering away in my cousin's PC today. My 9800 GTs both died in a little over 2 years... stock.

I guess they just don't make 'em like they used to
