Upgrade my GTX480 Lightning to 580 lightning?

Thread Starter
I'm trying to make my mind up whether or not to go ahead and upgrade!

I have only had my 480 since November. Can I really justify spending £425 on a card that's 5-10% quicker than mine and slightly less power hungry. But i'm interested to see if I can reach 1GHz with it which my 480 lightning couldn't do!

I wouldn't mind if I can get a good price for my 480 but realistically I'm only gonna get around £200 for it!

What u guys think?

Money wise, the 480 is enough.
Fun wise, why not?

I have been abit annoyed with my 480 lightning since I bought it because around a month later the 580 were released! Should have done my research i suppose!! It's still an awesome card though. If I get the 580 i would install the 480s backplate as the 580 does not have one which seems a waste.

Not worth the cost imo. You could probably buy a 2nd 480 for the amount you'd spend upgrading to the 580.

If you really want to though, it can't hurt to post your card up for sale and see what kind of offers you get.

If you do that, you will have issues selling the 480 tho.

The 480 Lightnings and Gigabyte SOC's were both released waaay too late in the 480 lifecycle.

The GTX580 you'll see about 10-15% increase in performance. If anything, as stated by people above me, just buy another GTX480 and you will get some of the best performance around.

Well i did it! Couldn't help myself! Got it yesterday and installed it in my rig under water same as my 480 and well:

First impressions are very good. Runs around 8-10'C cooler than 480. Memory OCs much better and so far GPU OC is promising also. Currently running 975MHz Core and 4600MHz effective DDR5.

Vantage GPU score has gone from 25,000 to around 31,000
3DMark11 has gone from 7050 to 7700. [ and we are still not done ]

Actual fps in games is impressive also. Metro 2033 avg FPS has gone up by 5-6FPS.

The difference in OC potential has definitely made it a worth while buy.

What i have noticed though in stress apps like FurMark and OCCT the card holds back. Is there some protection mechanism in place. I know they have overcurrent protection but my 480 used to do 900fps used to get red hot pulling nearly 600W from the wall.

The 580 only runs 500fps pulls only 450W from the wall but still says GPU usage is 99% and even the GPU temps don't get hot, so whats holding it back?

Something else I've noticed is that the 580 only has a GPU temp sensor where the 480 had 2 GPU temp sensor, 2 PCB temp sensors.

Also don't like the fact they dropped the backplate
