Sapphire 6870 overclock

Hi everyone.

Having recently purchased a Heatkiller 3.0 for my QX6700 with rather disappointing results (Reseat after reseat still gives me poorer temps compared to my old Fuzion CPU block) i've decided to get out the old Fuzion GPU block and watercool my graphics card (Sapphire 6870) - i need to satisfy those overclock urges somehow . May as well accept this old quad core isn't going any faster.

Currently, the results i get are fantastic. i'm overclocked to 1000MHz core, 1125MHz memory and it barely touches 45 degree's - all on stock voltages running MSI Kombustor on Xtreme mode. No artifacting or anything unusual so far.

This i think gives me alot of room to push this card further. Problem is, i'm not familiar with overclocking a graphics card. I don't trust this to be enough to fully tell if a card is stable. I also need some refrences to know what voltages i can put in this card and what maximum clocks i can expect.

Can anyone help me?

msi kombuster is a good program to use. the Unigine and 3dmark06/11 are others. Try game benchmarks and 15 minutes of actual gameplay to make sure everything is stable. After all gameplay is what matters most to you.

this thread should have good info for you. i don't think the 6870 has voltage control or at least not currently when I checked about two months back.

Thanks, but the link you posted is to a retailer

I've got a problem with MSI Afterburner though (Latest beta)

I've hit the limit on the core clock slider, it won't let me increase it any more then 1000MHz, and i want to explore beyond this region. If this requires VBIOS flashing, i may not do it without some sort of guarantee it'll work....

A while back, i overclocked this card using MSI and it was stable, i decided to flash the clocks to the card seeing as it ran perfectly fine. So, I flashed this cards BIOS using winflash (Windows enviroment), then it refused to boot into windows. My only option was to use ATI flash outside windows to recover it.

ATI Flash couldn't detect the card, so i had to do a blind flash which by luck worked.

I'm wary of flashing sinse this experience
