It is still a great card

But unlockability will be stopped by AMD.
The only thing still unclear is if all 6950 users will be affected or just new purchases.

If all 6950 owners will be inhibited of unlocking or even using there already unlocked card ....there will be something in the new drivers inhibitng a Cayman Pro (6950) with 1536 shaders or 6970 BIOS from using 3D applications.

If not new branches of 6950 will only be laser cut.
But aside all that PCS++ is the real problem maker here.

Owners of a 6950 PCS++ will have special problems, due to there warranty contradiction.

The PCS ++ was sold with a 6970 BIOS.
Power Color are dragging themselves out of harm now by saying the 6970 BIOS is not meant for permanent use but only for testing.
Which means any customer with a PCS++ is still not allowed to flash the card for permanent use or warranty will be voided because mailfunction and unstable behavior is bound to happen.

Legally there is no problem because they never advertised the card to be flashable.
But I think it is a deal breaker because they make people assume it and don´t say anything to disprove the fact that it is still prohibited.

So people who are planning on gettinga 6950 and want to unlock it be sure to check the arrival date at your retailer to ensure the branch the 6950 is from was not laser cut yet!
Anything earlier than March should be fine to unlock.

AMD stated since day one that unlocking is not okay. I don't understand how this comes as a shock. There's also been 1000000 threads about this, and anyone who does enough research are aware of it.

PCS++ isn't a problem maker. The issue AMD had with this card is resolved, why go any deeper into it?

Sry I did not know threads had already been made about it being in affect.
I thought I could share some good info.

And it seems not everbody was aware at last

The Powercolor news on the other hand are newer ..and I don´t think most people know about it yet.

Thanks Kung Pow, I am one of the people who was not aware of this and I've been considering selling my 5870 Eyefinity 6's to get one or two of these. I've seen tons of articles on here about people unlocking their cards, but not about AMD doing anything about it. Do you think if I get one of the open box 6950's on New Egg I should be safe to unlock? I'd imagine they'd have to be older batches if they're open box right?

Yes that is an indicator but you can never be sure.
The only way of being 100% sure the card hasn´t been laser cut yet is by checking the arrival date of the product at your retailer.
Just send Newegg an email and ask them to tell you when the card came in.
Anything sooner than March 15th should be save to unlock
But still be aware.....there are no long term studies of unlocked cards...and even though AMD might be exaggerating a little to stop people from unlocking I would not yet exclude the possibilty of mail function or negative side effects.
Just get a card that has the best overclocking results to compensate the unlock like the Twin Frozr IIi or ASUS DCUII ....a > 1GHZ overclock compensates or even exeeds the unlock performance easily

Glad to help

I'm glad I got my card when I did, really feared that I'd get a locked card

But who knows if AMD will go through with this, could this not be more of a clever marketing trick? Them saying they not happy and are going to permenantly lock the cards, hords of people are flocking to grab the last remaining unlockable cards.

And who know's they may not even lock them, but still, you'd expect AMD to realise in the begining that locking shaders would only be a tempery solution, as people have a tendancy discover these thing (not to mention the dual bios, as nice a touch as this is, it kind of does remove fear in bricking your card if you screw up, making it easier to stuff around with it to try unlock potential)

I rate is will still be a little while before, if AMD does lock them, for the old GPU's run out, and suppliers stock piles run out, probably will still be another month or two before we will see locked cards

Bah, pay for a 6950 and you should get a 6950. AMD should be stopping those unlocking the cards because by doing so you're conning AMD out of money and that's not cool.

I'm still confused why companies don't prevent this from the get go? Especially after all the 465 flashing you would have thought ATI would have thought of this. Is it because the majority if people who buy cards like these aren't on OCN or overclockers at all?

I wonder what percentage of these cards get unlocked.....

The Marketing trick theory is nice ...but why would they release Disclaimers that unlocking was bound to cause mailfunction and card failure then?

Also this is not the first AMD card able of being unlocked?
There are many other cards from AMD that can do it as well.

So either it is a marketing trick or just them being to lazy to laser cut their cards^^
Either way I won´t unlock my card because there are not long term studies yet.
What if the unlock decreases the life expectancy exponentionally?
And there won´t be any warranty if somethings goes wrong during the process or else.
So why risk damaging a card if overclocking can bring the same result if not even better?

The unlock only delivers marginal performance compared to a good oc which could compensate it to the double

I will get 2 nice Twin Frozr III and overclock the hell out of them .)

The OP has also been spreading a lot of FUD about this issue. You really should do some research before spreading bs on the forums. Thats how some of these rumors start.

Yeah, I'll take your word for it.

Do you have any proof to back that statement up? Didn't think so.
