I am going to reinstall Windows 7 tomorrow when I install my new P67 board. Does anyone have an idea as to what is the best order to install drivers, apps, etc? When the desktop first loads, after the install, should I get all of the Win 7 updates first, then install chipset drivers, VGA drivers, etc or what order should I install everything??

7 is definately better than vista in that aspect. i use to re-install vista about every 6 months. i think 7 is better about registry self maintanence

I always do drivers first, then updates. But i dont think it really matters.

I always load drivers 1st also. I recommend just downloading the sp1 standalone to cut the number of updates down.
I only reinstall windows when swapping mobos.

Win7 is pretty resilient. I've been running the same install since it was released out of beta. Switching back and forth between AMD and nVidia GPUs as well.

Had to re-install it once on my HTPC because a windows driver update messed it up and it wouldn't even boot.

I wouldn't bother spending the time to re-install unless you have a good reason(Significant performance issues or errors).

Creating a partition/drive image is a good idea once you've got all your software installed so you can get back to a fresh point(quickly) when you do run into an issue(you will, it's almost impossible to avoid).

As for install order, I've done many installs on the machines I support for a living and it really makes very little difference, although I like to install the drivers first. (NEVER use the hardware driver update feature built into windows(any version). It'll work about 14% of the time... the other 86% it'll corrupt your drivers or install the wrong ones... happy bluescreens)

I try to do a reformat every 6 months. I also reformat my Ubuntu box with it. However my server (I usually backup all my files to it too) I haven't formatted in about 3 years. But then again I just use it to store crap on so I never really use it.

xp was monthly. almost to the day. 7 is every six months or so. on my laptop more often, but its used on customers infected computers so yeah.

as far as drivers from win update, they work fine for office computers, otherwise i let it install my mouse/monitor drivers, and thats about it. everything else i get from the chip manf. for example, my wlan card is an asus something or other, made by ralink. so i get the ralink drivers.

If it isn't broke, don't try and fix it.
