Running a ethernet from my Home to my Office.

Thread Starter
I have decided to cut back on some un-needed bills.

I have decided to get rid of the internet package I have in my office building ( about 100ft from my house) and just run a eithernet cable from my home to the office.

Now, I have tried to use a Range extender but its just too far. So running a cable is a must.

My question is how should I go about doing this so the cable doesn't corrode or sun rot.

I was thinking of getting some smaller pvc pipe and run the cable through it and bury it in the ground, but I wanted to see what you guys thought?

Any suggestions?

lol, eithernet.

Permissions/legalities of running cable aside, you probably should tube the cable and bury it, like you mentioned. I wouldn't do something like string it in the open air because the sun will severely degrade the casing, as you're afraid of.

What is between your house and your office? Is it all on the same property? If so, then you should just tube and bury it--it's probably the easiest solution that will avoid the most headaches down the road.

I guess you could use PVC, and pray that no one dices it. But +100 feet of PVC might be a bit pricy.

You try a powerful wireless "N" WAP?

Have you considered multiple range extenders? What range extender did you use? My understanding is ethernet cable shouldn't be run longer than 300ft.

I have a pair of UBNT Picostations (http://www.ubnt.com/picostation), and they do a fantastic job connecting my PC to my router (opposite corners of the house). Full strength signal through the house and neighborhood. They're rated for outdoor use and I can adjust the signal power in the settings (including power exceeding legal limits). You may seriously be able to connect your office and home with one of these antennas at each.

Cat5, ethernet whatever! lol

Ya its all on my property. I just basically have my business behind my house.

So I guess tubing it and burying it is the best solution!

I've thought about that, but you also have to consider the price difference.

Two extenders would be much much more than 50.00 dollars worth of cable and pvc piping ( which I already have ). I bought a ****ty Netgear from bestbuy today, and I think it would be a bigger pain doing two extenders than it would be to just run some cable.

I was more commenting on the spelling--"eithernet." Like, either this, or that (it's ethernet). Just made me laugh when I saw it--like, which one do I go with? Hmm...either!

burying it is the most sensible, but as someone else said, they've had open-air cable for 5+ years just fine, so maybe you can just get away with that.

I guess I'd do whatever is easiest for you, and if something goes wrong, then try the more difficult method.

I already done that, haha...

I bought small diameter PVC pipes and buried them underground...

I was like running 5 cables that time..

Also make sure water does not enter it, it might destroy the casing.

I'd think I would only need about 50ft of PVC ( which lucky I use in my business ).

The longest route would be from my storage area in the building to the actual office area.
