Hmm if Nintendo makes a console now that is far graphically superior to Xbox 360/PS3 it may force Microsoft and Sony to release new consoles.

Could it be that the new Pretendo "console" is just another handheld? That's exactly what Pretendo needs...another handheld.

How could it not be more powerful than the 360 or ps3. If they can't beat the performance of 5 year old systems then that is a pretty big fail in my opinion... It should be easier and cheaper to beat the ps3 and 360 with each passing month as technology progresses.

The audience that powers consoles will move to smartphones soon enough anyway, I can see the PS4/Xbox720/Nintendo Poo being the start of the downfall for consoles just like when the PS1 came out and it happened to arcades. (Yeah, I watch Extra Credits.)
I believe that when this happens, AAA developers will either move to the smartphone/social gaming market (And have trouble adapting) or move to PC as the primary AAA market, but it'll probably be a niche.

Seeing as power and graphics seem to trump just about anything else these days, they're setting themselves up yet again for disappointing third-party support. Don't cave, you've made more than enough money to ride out the storm and release a new console on equal ground at the start of the next generation.
Except they don't need to, if they have a gimmick that gets the mainstream crowd and produce a profit per console just like the Wii, third party doesn't matter at all.

You're completely forgetting that the Xbox 720 and PS4 may be not so far away, we've heard that the PS3 and 360 will be supported for 10 years, not that there won't be any consoles for that long, add in the fact that Microsoft and Sony would be stupid to not be designing their new consoles now and remember that the 360 came out a year before the PS3 and dominated it because of that and you see that this could turn into a significant marketing advantage for Nintendo.

The PS3 is far superior in terms of hardware than the 360, but it isn't used because the 360 came here first. The 360 got the most sales. The 360 is what they design for, then port to PC and PS3.

The Cell, used properly, makes the PS3 faster than the Xbox 360.

Sales just means it's popular. It doesn't define anything else really. Most people put the Wii down, even kids, after a couple of uses here and there. Sales is irrelevant in most of the discussions taking place.
Then what does define winning the console wars? Which one people like more? That'd be the Wii, the Wii won in sales too and I'll bet it won in total revenue bought in, if you're going to say about games...Well, that's an opinion and how can you have a war with no victors or losers as opinions are neither right nor wrong?

However, the PS3 and the x360 were vastly superior.
If the same pattern emerges during the next generation, it will become even clearer that Nintendo's performance isn't up to par and even those who bought the wii out of nostalgia will realize that the days of glory are over.
Sure, the folks at Nintendo produce some innovative ideas from time to time, and they deserve to be respected for that, to some extent.
However, there's a phrase I often see in OCN's AMD vs nVidia/Intel threads:

"Doing it first vs doing it right"
Read the article, it says that they're "aiming for the hardcore crowd" again.

PS3 wins as a home theater maybe, but in terms of gaming the 360 and PS3 are fairly even. PS3 has CPU that is theoretically more powerful but more difficult to utilize (most games aren't CPU-bound anyway), and the 360 has a more powerful GPU and more memory. And the next Wii will likely be more powerful than both in all of the above.

I'm excited for this because it'll kick MS and Sony into gear, and when new consoles come out PC games will start utilizing newer tech.
The idea of the Cell CPU is that it can take a lot of the strain away from the GPU, it's extremely fast for floating point stuff.

Until you use the Cells FP capabilities, upon which the PS3 wins.

However, more horsepower isn't the best thing, the weakest console tends to sell the most...The PS1 was weaker (Slightly) than its competitors, the PS2 was far slower than the Xbox and Gamecube, Wii was the slowest out of this generation, etc, I think its down to price.

Read the article? They're aiming for hardcore gamers.

Nintendo need to make sure that 1) Their new console is easy to develop for, 2) It has good first party and launch support from day 1 to get people to upgrade from their Wii, 360 and PS3s (Easy for Nintendo) and 3) that it still has speed, for console level stuff I'd think that a custom AMD APU with 4 Llano cores but more shaders (800 or so?) would be very nice, as well as 4GB RAM shared between the console and GPU as needed, it'd still be fairly cheap and easy to cool/power, but very fast.

If they do those? Then this will succeed and give them a years (at least) worth of free sales as there won't be any real competition.

Perhaps not in terms of sales or profit, but after three generations of surviving mostly on first-party titles, they need to win developers back.

As a gamer (and not a Nintendo shareholder), Nintendo's profits don't drive my interest in their products. I love their systems, but there's a point even for me where first-party titles just won't be enough.

Third-party matters.
