For everyone saying that it's going to flop because of bad graphics:

Don't forget the Wii has been winning the console war. For us, graphics are very important. For casual gamers, they're not. The next Nintendo system can just be on the level of the PS3/360 hardware and still have amazing sales, especially if they launch it before Microsoft and Sony get their next consoles out (which it looks like that will be the case).

I for one applaud what Nintendo has done with the Wii.

Nintendo was at least taking risks with a hardware release and was doing something new, that paid off big, especially since two years later both Sony and Microsoft began development (or just flat out copied in Sony's case)concepts Ninetendo pioneerd with this console.

So many people piss and moan on this board about how game developers don't take risks and here we have people %$#^& on Nintendo for doing just that...

But I digress...

I don't think it matters if the Wii 2 (That's what I'm calling it) is "a little too early". The Early Bird Gets The Worm. Nintendo will be ahead for a long time. Remember that Sony expected the PS3 to live 10 years. So... another fear years at least, if they stick to that plan. I'm not sure what Microsoft had planned. Regardless, they now know they are in trouble. The Wii 2 will most likely make the PS3 and XBOX 360 look like old tech. People will buy the Wii 2, and the games, and Nintendo will be ahead. Microsoft and Sony will be playing catchup.

This is a good market move. By the time Playstation and XBOX catch up, Nintendo may be planning to release an even better system. They will have a system already set before the next gen consoles by its competitors. Then, they can focus on what aspects people like about the new consoles, and make the next one early again. And even better.

This is, of course, under the presumption that this announcement means a release "soon". It's entirely possible for Nintendo to slate the Wii 2 for 2014...

Oh, and games. Cos, ya know, the whole 5 games that they have that are worth a damn won't kill Sony and MS.

I have great respect for nintendo for being experimental and innovative, and it payed off because their Wii sold more than the xbox or ps3. And I've heard people saying nintendo is going on its way out, no. they are on top of the console throne.

And the wii does not have bad graphics, it may not be up to today's standards but I think it still looks pretty good.

Key word: upscale

What I really want to know is what they're going to do for the control scheme on this one. I really wouldn't put it past them to combine the more advanced motion tracking of the Move and the camera of the Kinect and call it revolutionary all over again. I'm going to have to practice on my facepalming technique. I don't think I'll be able to do it hard enough.

Wii has ps2 quality graphics.... they are almost identical. I think the hardware is slightly similar too.

The Wii was, once again, a quality system, but how they didn't see gamers flocking to HD consoles is beyond me. They had no real online infrastructure despite the industry clearly moving in that direction.

History will repeat itself, it'll give them a shot in the arm and, since they don't sell hardware at a loss, they'll come out of it largely unscathed, but they'll once again be the laughingstock of the so-called "hardcore" gamer.

I appreciate the types of games Nintendo games. They're among a select group that's making truly fun games anymore, but they just aren't moving with the industry. It's less painful for me seeing as I don't always agree with that direction either, but it pains me to see such a great company's reputation taking a plunge.
I agree completely. Nintendo can be absolutely fantastic overall and have fantastic hardware but they've lost themselves somewhere along the way.

Yes, but they should've done that awhile ago.

I don't think anyone is saying that the graphics will make the console flop. Where you saw that I don't know.

It's going to flop unless it has actual games.

And what does that sales chart have to do with anything? Excuse me, actually make that, what does sales have to do with anything? Just because the Wii sold more doesnt mean it's "been winning the console wars."

Sales just means it's popular. It doesn't define anything else really. Most people put the Wii down, even kids, after a couple of uses here and there. Sales is irrelevant in most of the discussions taking place.

I believe you can set the native rendering resolution. Not upscale.
