What was the GPU resembling? I thought it was more in the performance range of the Radeon 9200 or something? The Wii's GPU is kicking a GPU clocked at 233 MHz with 24 Mb of memory?

If they were running at HD, they would have surely needed a more powerful GPU. They were able to pull away with XBOX equivalent graphics at the same resolution. It wouldn't have been able to do HD at the same quality.

Graphics were a big set back for the console. We even saw cross platform games that looked dated on the Wii. Let alone, lacked some content as well. Although graphics are not everything, it surely held back many "quality" games.

Nintendo:

If you axe the 'Wii Stick' and apologize for ever coming up with it..

I will forgive you, after the 5 years of hating you, which followed 5 years of loving you.

It has to be better than current tech (ps 3 and xbox 360) or it would make nintendo behind again when and if this forces sony and M$ to release their own next gen consoles. seems like after the n64 nintendo is always playing catch up to sony and M$

Oh well, if it pushes Microsoft and Sony to develop up to date consoles, then it would push game developers to release technically up to date game developers...

As for the hardcore market, honestly, I doubt it, they realized releasing a game for everyone meant more sales, and more money.

You all realize this is Nintendo right? They are THE innovators of all games/peripherals. This will be fantastic. YES my Wii hasn't been getting as much play time lately, but still. Nintendo are the only ones who bring something new and unique to the table. Why do you think every other console manufacturer copies Nintendo left and right?

wow, people saying that the next gen sony and M$ will beat this, of course it will. If you release a console better than anything on the market, and you won't have any competition for 2-3 years, you own the market.

Provided Nintendo stick to making a console a "Console" (Aka, primarily designed for gaming, not movies, audio, etc) rather then an all-in-one solution (Aka media hub) i'll be happy.

Hahahahahah!!!11oneuno

No, there's a 1,000% chance that that is precisely what they and any other company that markets a console from now until 2050 will do.

I think you have that backwards.

It's actually going to be 7 years newer.

The answer is:

Because they don't.

Everybody copies from everyone. There's no single greatest contribution to console gaming that can be attributed to one company. If you mean the gimmick known as motion control, please. Who cares? People will look back 10 years from now and say: Oh yeah, motion control, we don't talk about that.

Don't forget the Wii has been winning the console war. For us, graphics are very important. For casual gamers, they're not. The next Nintendo system can just be on the level of the PS3/360 hardware and still have amazing sales, especially if they launch it before Microsoft and Sony get their next consoles out (which it looks like that will be the case).

Remember that Sony expected the PS3 to live 10 years. So... another fear years at least, if they stick to that plan. I'm not sure what Microsoft had planned. Regardless, they now know they are in trouble. The Wii 2 will most likely make the PS3 and XBOX 360 look like old tech. People will buy the Wii 2, and the games, and Nintendo will be ahead. Microsoft and Sony will be playing catchup.

This is a good market move. By the time Playstation and XBOX catch up, Nintendo may be planning to release an even better system. They will have a system already set before the next gen consoles by its competitors. Then, they can focus on what aspects people like about the new consoles, and make the next one early again. And even better.

This is, of course, under the presumption that this announcement means a release "soon". It's entirely possible for Nintendo to slate the Wii 2 for 2014...
I agree with the above. Nintendo out sold the competition with previous gen hardware (Gamecube). They inovated their control scheme to open the market to everyone.

And releasing the console early could mean 2 years of unchallenged sales as people grow tired of their 360s and PS3s. The only thing that would keep people away is the lack of good games. If they can get good games developed for their console than it could still compete well when the next gen 720s or ps4s are released.

One of your comments kind of implied that:

This platform will probably be in the leagues of the PS3/360 but for competition of the PS4 and the next Xbox.
In other words, Nintendo is going to be so far behind it's going to be a joke.

Sales just means it's popular. It doesn't define anything else really. Most people put the Wii down, even kids, after a couple of uses here and there. Sales is irrelevant in most of the discussions taking place.
It's a win for Nintendo but a lose for gamers. If Nintendo like you said can get good games than the hardware being 2 years behind wouldn't matter.

TRUE HDMI Dolby HD and DTS HD codec streaming, 3D Blu-ray, Netflix with full 5.1 surround and 1080p. As a Home Theatre guru I'd never accept anything less. For $300 there is simply nothing that can compare to the value a PS3 gives.

Now if Nintendo (which I seriously doubt) adds on 3D Blu-ray (or even a Blu-ray drive) with FULL HD codec bitstreaming things would be different.
A lot of that doesn't mean crap to most consumers. I'm sure even some "home theater gurus" saw the PS3 as a console first and overlooked it's capabilities as a good blu-ray player.
