Voltage Queation Phenom II x4 970

Thread Starter
Ok I just finished installing my Phenom II x4 970 that I got from Newegg today. The VID ( stock voltage ) is 1.425 volt for the core and 1.1 volt for the CPU/NB. It appears to be running fine @ stock so far, but does the VID seem a little high? And the CPU/NB seem a little low?? confused.gif
I am running 8 gigs ( 4x2 ) DDR3 @ 1600 9-9-9-24-33-1T at the moment. Do you more experienced overclockers think this chip will O.C. well? My goal is 4+ GHZ core and a 2.8 - 3.0 Ghz CPU/NB

1.10V for CPU/NB is normal. 1.425V for CPU is ok too.
My 955 has 1.10V(CPU/NB) and 1.40V(CPU).
You can easily hit 4GHz, but 3000 for CPU/NB, is harder(but not impossible). You can hit 2800-2900 though.

Just 4ghz would be awesome. It is soo fast even @ stock smile.gif
I have not tried any overclocking on it yet, I've only had it for like 6 hours lol.
I want to let the AS5 burn in a bit. I'm coming from an unlocked x3 740 that would not clock past 3.2ghz ( c2 chip thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif ) that had a vid of 1.325 volt and 1.2 volt on the CPU/NB. Another weird thing it with my x3 740 the CPU temp was like 9*c warmer than my core temp i.e. CPU socket temp was 51*c and core temps would be 42*c. But with this x4 970 the socket temp is 44*c and the core temps are 47*c while playing TF2?

Bump the northbridge to 2800 and bump CPU/NB Voltage to 1.256volts in bios and run prime95 to test stability_

So far, it seems 1.256volts is what works for me at 2800mhz NB Frequency

You could use this as a reference to start

I will try that after I let it burn in a little. AS of now it runs at like 51*c core and 47-48*c CPU socket temp with fresh AS5 @ 1.425 volt ( stock ) bios, 1.44 volt under load in windows. Just seems like the voltages are the exact opposite of my x3 740 and x2 555

Yours propably wont need that much voltage for stock, as motherboards usually set voltage too high. For example my 1055T at stock 2.8ghz had 1.275v, and It can run 3.3ghz at 1.175v.

I manually set the voltage to the " normal " voltage setting in the bios and it gave me 1.425 volts for the stock 3.5ghz. My AsRock board likes to over volt just a little in windows under load, so I get 1.44 under load stock. I do not have load line calibration in my Bios, I have checked several times, so I just live with the extra volts.

So I did a little tweaking last night. I've got to 3.7 GHz CPU so far on stock voltage, though I have not tried any higher yet. I set the CPU/NB to 2.4ghz @ stock 1.1 volt and ran 30 min of linX with no problem. But when I started playing Crisis, the game crashes within 5 minutes ( hard lock had to ctrl+alt+del out of the game ) so I put the CPU/NB back to 2 GHz and it played Crisis no problem with the cpu @ 3.7 GHz. My question is what voltage should I try next to get the CPU/NB stable @ 2.4 GHz? 1.1 volt @ 2.4 Ghz CPU/NB passes 30 minutes of LinX on 5120 MB setting, but crashed Crisis. I want to get 2.4 GHz CPU/NB stable before I move on to 2.6 Ghz .
Temps where 55*c core and 57*c Cpu socket temp. All voltages are stock and the AS5 thermal compound is like 10 hours old.
Also, What temp should not exceed 61*c? the CPU socket temp or the core temps? The core temps are usually higher than the CPU temp for some reason.
