Beginner Water Cooling Setup

Thread Starter
All in all, with an Antec 1200 case, I feel like my cpu should stay cooler than it does and I'm definitely willing to put time and some money into water cooling. Plus I just want to mod more stuff in my system haha!

I've looked around and watched reviews of parts, etc. and I've come to some specific questions. Links to related resources are appreciated.

1. Between the XSPC RX120 and RX240, would there be a noticeable difference? Also, where would I mount that in my system (in the back where there are two fans already?)?

2. Are there good single 5.25" bay reservoirs? I have three 5.25" bays in the Antec 1200 and I already have two optical drives, so if possible (and if practical) I'd like to have a single bay reservoir. Is the Swiftech Micro Rev2 Res. a single bay res? Any suggestions are appreciated in this area.

3. Is there a good option for budget pumps? I haven't done much research into this yet. How's the Swiftech MCP350? It seems to have good ratings.

My budget is about $200. Is this possible?

Thanks!

P.S. If I can't do it for around $200, I'm inclined to just go with a simple Corsair H70 setup since my budget is quite tight at the moment.

You can grab a Rasa RX 240/360 kit for under 200 and they are much better than the H70. I would avoid the 120 because it only offers the same cooling space as the H70. There is a difference between the two rads as the 240 will allow you to dissipate much more heat than the 120 rad will.

For mounting options you can mount it internally if there is space or externally using a rad box or make your own space internally with a case mod.

The Rasa kits use a Bay Res which takes up 2 5.25" bays iirc. As for pricing these kits come with everything you need aside from different colored tubing if you choose. You will need to pick up a silver kill coil or pt nuke to keep your loop from growing algae/bacteria. All together it should be under 200$ and its easier than piecing together a custom loop.

I believe swiftech has a Pump-radiator-reservoir combo, you just buy some tubing and a water block and you'll have a pretty solid water cooling setup.

1. The 240 would give you more expandability for the future more than a performance increase (i.e. putting a GPU on the loop). Also always go with the RX over the RS for the same reason.

2. Swiftech does have that crappy opaque plastic reservoir that is single slot, but you should either go with an internal res, a dual res with only one optical (seriously, who does disk-to-disk burns anymore anyway?) or go with the MCR Drive system. A good review/comparison (to be taken with a grain of salt and some more research, but a good beginning tool) can be found here http://www.maximumpc.com/article/how...nd_constructed

3. The Swiftech 350 is a great pump. I'd say 95% of people have either the DDC or the D5 pump. The DDC is the same as the 350/355/35x just with different variations of the same pump. The 650, 655, and 655-v are all variants of the D5 pump. Other companies use the same base pumps to make their customized versions, where other companies don't even bother making the pump, just a replacement volute (head/top) for those base pumps. Can't really go wrong with any of them. I've got a 5 or 6 year old 650 that still works like a charm (though it's been shelved for 4 years).

The best place to find deals when you're on a budget is buying from other members here on the forums I know I found fantastic deals that I otherwise would have not been able to afford. For $100 more than my H50 (which I'm going to return) I got a 360 rad with fans, pump, 3 reservoirs, tubing, CPU block, the whole shebang, and I'm sure you'll be able to find a deal too if you look!

Do you want to mount internally and CAN you mount internally?

Thanks! I was thinking about the Rasa 240 originally and yes I suppose I can do without the secondary optical (as though I was using it anyways lol).

I have the spot in the back of the Antec 1200 where there are two case fans vertically installed already, so I'll just mount the 240 rad where those were. Could I keep the Antec Tricool fans on the rad? Or should I use the fans that come with it? I've read reviews saying that the fans make very little difference and others that say that they are important.

Arksniper: Could you explain what the silver kill coil or pt nuke is? I assume it kills bacteria (lol) but does it go in the res?

Just looked again at the XSPC, is it possible to find a RX240 kit? I only see an RS so far for $130.
