Warning: XFX's silent revision on the 6970 - Page 23

XFX-Y-U-NO-TELL-US-OF-CHANGES.jpg

The top card is the newer v1.1 model which has no back plate, no bios switch, a noisier fan motor and seems to knock itself offline during benchmarks! (lastest drivers and software installed and definatly not a heat issue).

The second card is near perfect and it would of been a lot better if XFX kept producing these imo!

The PCB used on this card is an AMD design that other manufacturers are using on their 6970s as well. It does not have an AMD logo on the PCB as the circuit board is made by us to their design. The components used on the second revision cards are not inferior in their ability to perform to the first revision. If there are any questions or concerns in regards to modifying the cooling solution to this or ANY other XFX product we would love the opportunity to discuss it with our customers. You can reach us at 800-880-3225 or through our support page at www.XFXFORCE.com.

Really now? The V2 card is no different to the V1? Just like with every other custom revision XFX card in the past too, right? rolleyes.gif

That's why when I RMA'd my reference 4890, that had full voltage support, a decent cooler...it just randomly died, and I got back your cheapened card that overheated at bone stock. Yeah, that card was SOOOO great, and just as good as reference. rolleyes.gif It also didn't have voltage support either, and it had absolutely NO VRM cooling at all.

Yeah, sure. You guys make great cards. rolleyes.gif

Sorry, but until XFX finally proves their worth anything...you get no sympathy or love from me. This is just yet again, another great reason to avoid your company. You cheapened out the reference design....AGAIN.

Aren't non-reference cards supposed to bring better coolers and better quality components?

After reading this, I will no longer buy anything from XFX mad.gif

Thread Starter
Ultimately, who cares about the quality of the card? If you know you'll be getting something else, nobody will force you to buy it, and you'll be the only one to be blamed for not checking it out. The problem is when you can't check out the product in advance because nobody knows what it is you're getting. Information is power, so had XFX demonstrated transparency like EVERY single other vendor did out there, a simple SKU changed would have clearly indicated something new was abound, and none of this would have happened.

Fact of the matter is, I wasn't the only one who fell to this hot potato. Some guy on [H] called XFX support before ordering his card, because he saw this here thread and wanted to make sure his new cooler would fit. What did the XFX rep ask for? The model number of the card, and he confirmed the cooler would fit. It wasn't going to fit of course, so even XFX's own support cannot give out accurate information.

Model numbers aren't just an internal thing for said vendors, but that they are in fact a key piece of information that is used to make proper purchase decisions by educated, literate and intelligent consumers, and that failing to update, modify or change the name of a product or its SKU whenever important changes arise (new screw hole placements and features stripped away qualify as "important") is a serious misnomer and lacks professionalism. It is not illegal, it's just plain unethical, and XFX has not yet addressed why a SKU change was not made when every other competitor out there had the clarity of mind to do it?

Kudos for an actual XFX for showing up in person. Now, I would be curious to know why you didn't think it relevant to alert customers that the card you sold under a specific model name and number for months was drastically changed (whether by order of AMD or your own) without notice? You are under no legal obligations to notify anyone of course, but I recon people do not like surprises when purchasing 400$ items, so perhaps next time they will bring their 400$ to another vendor where surprises are not at risk of happening?

Thank you for your time smile.gif

Tigerlord, I completely agree with you on this one. Even though I own a 6950 from them, I will look elsewhere on my next purchase. Xfx should have made it right the first time and provide a different part number if hardware changes are done to their products.

To the xfx rep (action speaks louder than words, keystrokes in this case smile.gif )

i just read this whole thread, it kept me up much later than i hoped. i cant understand why they did not just do a simple change of model number? why? i am really not liking what i am reading and now that they have gotten rid of the back plate i will not be getting a 6950-70 or whatever, unless it has a back plate. the plate protects the card, i am in my case constantly and cringe when something touches my video card (like a sata cable)

WHY AMD WHY?

you should say that to nvidia too ... gtx 580's don't bring a backplate...

Using the lack of backplate as a reason for not getting a graphic card is nonsense ...

I'm really enjoying my sapphire's with the new rev of the pcb and lack of backplate ... but they changed the model number... and i keep touching the cards with cables, fingers even water... ehehe...

Other than XFX no changing the model number of the card, i think users are over reacting ...
