Couple Q's about Linux.

Thread Starter
I'm putting together a budget build, and since the budget is very tight, I don't feel like spending $100 on W7. So, since Linux is free I've been thinking of going that route.

1. Will I run into hardware/software compatibility issues?
2. Is it easy to install?
3. Will I be able to run software like Acid Pro, Photoshop?

Sorry if my questions are redundant, but Tapatalk's search function isn't perfect.

1. Most modern motherboards with your typical chipsets will have drivers already in the kernel, graphics card, nvidia is pretty solid, ati is "sketchy" imho, most intergrated sound cards like realtek's will work just fine, but creative soundcards seem to have issues. if you gave us a list of what hardware you plan on using with it, i'm sure a few google searches or having it ourselves we can be more clear on the subject.

2. fairly easily to install, but depends really on what distro you use, and your experience with partitioning and formatting harddrives.

3. photoshop would more than likely be a no go, as it is made for windows/mac, not linux yet. there are however programs that can reproduce a good chunk of its functionality, like inkscape and gimp, not sure what level of what you do with photoshop, as it is in my experience that 90% of all people who use photoshop, use about a buck fifty of the overall cost of it (meaning they really don't need it ). not sure what acid pro is, so i can't answer if it will run in wine or if there is a linux alternative.

looks pretty standard imho, i would say with that setup you shouldn't have any driver issues with any of the distro's using a modern distro.

if you plan on using any type of wifi and printer, you might have to verify them being linux compatible as well.

i wouldnt go ati

ati might be passable in windows, but some times its a nightmare in linux... its either it works or it makes you want to drop kick a midget

if you havent bought the parts yet, try researching a comparable nvidia card and you will be grateful you did down the line

i hear photoshop works great in wine... BUT really if you dont need the top dollar professional functions of photoshop its just better to run gimp which will satisfy almost every single person who thinks they will die without photoshop... the functions gimp is missing compared to photoshop are generally things people dont even know exist

also, that acid program i dont know anything about so sorry i cant comment on it either

as far as distros go... if you havent tried linux before i suggest you check out Mint linuxmint.com pick up one of the main releases NOT the debian version and youll be fine as a beginner, if you decide you want something more advanced you can move to debian or arch or something similar (i personally love crunchbang, its debian more or less)

if you have any problems do some google-fu first and then feel free to ask here
Kinda meh now...

Sadly Acid Pro doesn't work in Linux. There are some alternatives to it that do run in Linux though you might wanna look into.

Ardour is one I've heard is pretty good.

Acid Pro is a nice bit of software

While you can in theory run a music studio in Linux (and I'm sure I'll get flamed for saying this), it's a nightmare and a lot of effort, and you'll make a lot of sacrifices (like VSTs)
That (and gaming) is the reason I run Windows on my main rig.

Check out Ubuntu Studio, it's got a different kernel more suitable for music production, and has lots of tricky stuff pre-configured.

i second that if i could run my games, record my guitar tracks and run autodesk inventor all on linux id ditch windows completely but sadly 90% of my games refuse to even start up in wine, autodesk wont even install in wine it gets a buttload of errors and last but not least acid pro, frooty loops, sound forge and all those lovely little vst's that exist for windows...... to put it simple its like kicking at a dead horse

I guess I'll have to make some sacrifices then. I might even resort to using a sketchy copy of windows on a dual boot setup. Also, I found a Galaxy GT430 to replace the 4670, with the same features for the same price.
