While you can in theory run a music studio in Linux (and I'm sure I'll get flamed for saying this), it's a nightmare and a lot of effort, and you'll make a lot of sacrifices (like VSTs)
That (and gaming) is the reason I run Windows on my main rig.

Check out Ubuntu Studio, it's got a different kernel more suitable for music production, and has lots of tricky stuff pre-configured.
You can get very close to acid pro, but nothing like Scratch/Traktor/Ableton/ect...

http://ardour.org/

You don't need VSTs, you have jackd and plugins! It's a little tricky to set up but can be done.

Photoshop has GIMP and some versions work well in wine:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...ication&iId=17

As for the other points, they got covered decently. Games do work well too, depending on the game and how well you are at working with linux. =P lol Also depends hugely on the distribution.

Ardour is absolutely FANTASTIC. The next release will include full VST support as well as MIDI keyboards/plugins support. I'm beyond excited for it.

I would also like to mention that I have ATI cards on all my systems and other than trying to run games in WINE I have never had any graphical issues.

Could you recommend an entry level NVidia card that will do so. Or is that an oxymoron?

you could always ask in the nvidia section where some one who has no life and REALLY knows their nvidia cards could probably give you a better answer

A 430 is imho your best bet. Or a 520, if you find it cheap.

I would suggest a gtx 460, will give you a bit more power when you need or want it, on average about $40 more than gts 430, there is also the gtx 550 ti, seems to be about the same thing as a gtx 460, i honestly don't know a whole lot about the 500 series, but they seem to be around the same price, and both look to be good cards at a quick glance.

The 4670 is more than enough for HTPC usage but in Linux the drivers would show up otherwise. That's the sad point of the story I keep hearing. I've yet to be able to test it personally but I wouldn't risk it.

The 550 is another 450/250 level card. Not close to the 1GB but almost within a few FPS of the 768MB GTX460. Some OCing might make up for it but it's not worth more than 100USD in my opinion.

Get the GTX460 1GB version and enjoy yourself.

Wouldn't a GTX be a little overkill for the occasional HD movie?

Sorry this turned into a VGA thread.
