Explain Sprint roaming to me please?

Thread Starter
I see a lot of sprints coverage map is "roaming"

I have a few questions about it.

Can you make, receive calls and texts when roaming?
Can you use data when roaming?
Does it cost money when your roaming?
Who's network is it roaming on to? Verizon?

and lastly.... Will I be satisfied with Sprint's coverage (evo 4g) coming from AT&T?(iphone 4)

Roaming will not incur any charges to you as the consumer. The coverage is expanded from Sprint's native network through inter-carrier agreements and tower leasing respectively. Most likely, it is roaming onto Verizon since they are both sharing a CDMA/EVDO infrastructure. Regional carriers using spectrum could also be in agreement to roam.

Since there now is an FCC ruling that data must be mandatory roaming, chances are data has originally not been employed for roaming. Alas, this is all in the background.

As a consumer you should know that you are not paying for anything more than what you are expected to pay as long as you use your texting, calls, and data within and to other callers in the United States. Anything beyond that will be subject to international roaming (if you're using in Canada, Mexico) and long distance (calls outside of US) charges. At best, you will experience an increase in areas where you will have 3G service when the FCC has cleared all provisions and appropriations for when data roaming is forced upon all carriers.

EDIT:
As for coverage, AT&T is great in my area along with Sprint, so it's up to how everyone else feels about it in your area. Sprint is known for their great data services but spotty phone call quality since it is employed on an all digital network (all EVDO and no CDMA 1x) with no analog fallback (GSM). I'd say try Sprint, and use their grace period if you don't like the coverage wherever you use it!

Excellent! Do you think I will be happy switching from AT&T?

Assuming you get good coverage where you use it you should be happy with the savings and actual unlimited data plan. Are you getting a 4g phone?

I would be getting the EVO 4G, its not a whole lot cheaper but it would be my own plan apart from my parents.
