xfx 6850 black edition or diamond 5850???

Thread Starter
hey guys i have the xfx 6850 black edition card ive overclocked it and benchmarked the crap out of it and im not very happy with its performance at maxed settings in metro 2033/stalker call of pripyat/homefront
it plays metro fine until i get into massive gunfights and things start exploding.when i play homefront it runs fine but it laggs on loading screens and laggs in small amounts when everything is onfire and exploding(white phosphorous death scene). when i play call of pripyat it laggs randomly for 2-3 seconds and sometimes laggs for 20-30 seconds then black screens. it doesnt happen all the time but every now and again and very randomly. i still have 5 days to take it back to frys and switch it for something else. i paid 228.39 total for the xfx 6850 be card. i can get a diamond hd5850 at frys for 194.99 including tax they are onsale this week plus it has a $20 rebate. should i get the 5850 or should i get a cheaper 6850 and see if it works better?

Metro 2033 is cpu intensive, get a x6 or i7
post #3 of 15
5850 is much better than 6850 in terms of raw performance. 6850 might perform better in games that use tessellation.

^ that and the 5850 is faster than a 6850.
the 5850 performs better than the 6850 but for only like $50 more you can get a 6950 on newegg.com (the msi one sells for $270 - $25 rebate, i think) and get like almost 2 times the performance if you unlock it to a 6970.

I suggest u to get hd5850,
but if u can find a hd6950 1gb/gtx560ti/hd6870 for a cheap price then get one of them.
Note: u cant unlock hd6950 1gb model but still its great

thats all well and good but im not looking to spend more money i want something that will play stalker and homefront full tilt. i could care less about metro 2033 ive beaten it twice and have grown bored of it. as for my cpu mine is a 555 unlocked to a x4. whats weird is when i had my 5770 metro ran fine at high settings and i had no lag whatsoever i was running in dx10 due to odd issues in dx11. so i dont think its just the cpu. i am planning to throw a 9500gt in my system just to run physx. my question honestly is will the 5850 stomp my old 5770 into the dirt and surpass my 6850?

as for the 6950/6970 those cards are awesome but way more money than im willing to ever spend on a gpu. the only way i would own one is if i got it for less than 230 or it was given to me. its not that im cheap its just that i have other financial responsibilities so my computer hardware comes last. as is i have 228.39 to work with it will all be in frys credit unless i buy a soda and walk out with the cash.... but then im out a gpu and being able to get hardware quickly

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/...eo_card_review

With release drivers the 6850 lags only a little behind the 5850. However, it's quieter with better tessellation and crossfire scaling all with less energy (and newer drivers should even it out). Oh, and since 5xxx series is phasing out, RMA will be more difficult. If all that doesn't matter, then the 5850 could be a better card for you. Also, I know you're in CA which means tax is a pain but paying more than $180 for a 6850 is ridiculous to me.

I've only heard good things about the black edition 6850. I can't imagine a cheaper one doing much better unless you get incredibly lucky.

EDIT: Ninja post . 6950 1GB is going for as little as $230 before tax on newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-523-_-Product

frys has the same card for 50 cheaper than i paid for it so if i cant snag a 5850 for 179 ill pick up a newer black edition 6850 for close to the same price after tax.
im not to worried about rma beacuse i typically buy a new card every 6-9 months anyways sometimes sooner if i can get a good deal and have the extra cash like i have as of the last few months.
ive looked at reviews and the 5850 runs better than my 6850.
as far as tessellation and all goes i run everything at max settings anyways so little things like that arent all that noticeable. between my 5770 and the 6850 the image quality during games were close to the same i couldnt tell the difference... were it showed was performance on several games the 5770 ran fine but on a select few it ran like complete crap. im looking for performance at super high settings not little extras that make the quality better. i would love to get nvidia cards but my mobo is xfire and i plan to run 2-3 cards together once i find one thats meets my needs

It's not much better it is a little better, maybe 5fps better in a game like metro.

OP, as a 6850 owner I can tell you that you are not going to be able to max out Metro with this card, infact depending on AA and resolution you may not be able to max it out with two 6850's. For games like metro you would really benefit from a quad core. A phenom X4 should be fine. While sandybridge cpu's are definitely better going to a sandybridge setup from your current setup is going to cost you probably $400-600. That kind of money would be better spent on a Phenom x4 and a second 6850, that's of course if your MB can do CF, i'm not familiar with your board.

Edit: Didn't read your sig carefully enough, I see your CPU is unlocked to x4 anyway. I would suggest going with a second 6850, this will give you the best performance.
