The current parts such as you listed in the quote above are fairly easy and I assume others following this thread looking to "upgrade" would have them laying around or in there current builds as well
Well I guess it's even easier to find stuff if you just wanted to upgrade instead of starting from scratch. But it really depends how much patience you have when picking out your stuff.

I wouldn't spend $200 on an AMD CPU & motherboard though. Sandy bridge looks pretty promising given the price.

I'd look for a deal on 8GB DDR3 RAM (~$65), a sandy bridge combo (~$110+), and a nice graphics card. Tigerdirect had a GTX 480 for $230 after rebates last week. Remember the prices I provided are pretty much the cheapest you can find right now (with rebates).

He'll probably take this parts from his old rig,
he mentioned that he needs a new cpu, high end gpu, psu, ram, mobo for around $500,
I would simply oppose your idea of getting a ssd for that budget,if he gets ssd...he'll have to cheap out on his gpu,cpu
I see. Well, I was just giving some insight on my personal build. You can definitely drop the SSD and case from my suggestion and have about $140 to spend on other components.
