3 Displays Question

Thread Starter
Hi,

Can DVI, VGA, HDMI 5xxx card run 3 displays (not Eyefinity) simultaneously?

I read somewhere that if you plug display to HDMI, it will disconnect DVI port (do you maybe need to do HDMI > DVI?)? Or is this Eyefinity issue only?

Otherwise, I'll have to get card with DP. In that case, will the Passive DisplayPort to DVI adapter work (just for 3 displays setup, not Eyefinity)?

you need a card that supports Nvidia surrond or AMD eyefinity. Then you need either sli Nvidia to run three, or one AMD card but with a display port adapter.

Will the passive adapter work for non eyefinity use?

No. You can try the PowerColor Active adapter (which doesn't require USB power) but it doesn't work perfectly for me.

You DEFINITELY need something active for 3 monitors with eyefinity. My U3011 has a DP, so I'll be using one MiniDP->DP cable for it, and regular DVI for both my 2007WFPs.

Hi DjiXas. As has been said you definitely need to have a graphics card with a Display Port to be able to get an Eyefinity configuration going. It's not possible to use both a combination of DVI, VGA and HDMI.

At least one of your monitors will have to use displayport. As long as your monitors are running 1080p or below and has vga you could use an adapter such as this for your third monitor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812270279 . I use that same adapter for my eyefinity setup and have had no issues.

Hey guys, thanks for replies.

Sorry for confusing, I want 3 displays setup but have no intention to game or use Eyefinity. Just a casual setup... Would the passive DP > DVI work fine then? Or it still requires an active one?

Each GPU is limited to 2 screens, IIRC. You will need a second GPU. And in that case, you can have one of each type of monitor connection.

You will need an active adapter for DP>DVI. DP>VGA is the only way you can use a passive adapter and this solution only works for up to 1080p. The 5k and 6k series ATI cards all support at least 3 monitors, with the eyefinity 6 supporting 6 and the 6k series supporting 4. The cards will support 2 monitors via the DVI and HDMI, and the rest via Display Port.
