Well my Laptop got a bath.

I can either replace the parts to get it fully functional for roughly $270 or get a new laptop for about $400 to $500.

Current Laptop: Gateway P 6860 FX
Laptop Interest: Gateway P 7811 FX

The performance difference isn't too bad, of course I'd have to take my T9300 out of the 6860 and put it in the 7811.

I'm basically looking for a way to justify spending an extra $130 to $230 on the P 7811 FX.

The parts I would be replacing:

LCD Screen / Bezel
Armrest / Top Cover
Bottom Case Chasis
Speakers
USB/Modem/Power Board
Power Button
Hinge / Power Switch Cover
Keyboard
VGA Heatsink

Motherboard is fine as is most the other parts.
But with all the parts I'm basically buying a whole new laptop anyway right?

Pros of buying complete laptop:

1. Better Performance
2. Already Assembled
3. Windows 7

Cons

1. I'll still have my mangled mess.
2. $130 to $230 extra spent.
3. Windows Vista (Not that I mind it, but I do like some features of Windows 7.)

Any other cons or pros people can think of?

I would say buy a new laptop; Even if you do salvage your old laptop, it probably won't last too long.

Also, you need 30 rep to post in appraisals, not 30 posts tongue.gif

Oh that definitely makes things a bit different, I probably should have stayed a little bit more active back when I originally joined.

And as far as I can tell, the lot of the boards I have checked out ... require something. I mean it's good practice.

You are most likely right, plus I would have to deal with used parts which could have something wrong with them.. and not know until I get it assembled.

you might want to look into the sager NP8130. i bought one to replace my old 6860 and love it. for right under 1200 bucks you get one awesome machine.

Thing is I'm attempting to not spend too much money. It's either a new laptop with the money I "might" see from selling parts off the current one, or parts to repair it.

I have however figured out there was some soldering issues with th P-7811FX. Kind of making me second guess that avenue, but the 7811 I am looking at has a Black Tie Warranty from Best Buy still on it. Of course, as usual, if anything is going to happen it usually occurs after the warranty has lapsed.

Does it have to be a Gateway computer?

Nobody has asked how your laptop managed to take a bath under your watchful eye?

You should be reported for electronics maltreatment. It's a felony I believe.

Doesn't "have" to be. I was looking for parts and happened to stumble upon the 7811, I'd prefer one.. but I'm looking at cost.

I gave it the Bath, after it had been bombarded with Shampoo. I made the mistake of entrusting my book bag, which contained my shampoo as well, to a friend. I'm not exactly sure who was responsible for allowing enough pressure to bust open my shampoo bottle... but I don't think pissed accurately describes how I felt.

I gave it a bath to salvage what I could. I got all the bottom half cleaned up, and dismantled my keyboard in the progress... and I'm not about to put it back together.

The top half... is toast. But new parts include just about everything but the motherboard.

well you can buy a 6860 for like 250~300 used and a 7811 for like 400. i personally just cant justify spending that kind of money on an old laptop when a new one (while costing twice as much) is WAY faster and just better all around.

one of my 6860s has been to the oven twice now, they all have crappy solder on the video cards, not just gateway but ALL nvidia cards in the 8xxx/9xxx series. i just could not spend 500 on a laptop that is 2 generations behind on the CPU with a video card i know will give me trouble down the road.

Salvage your existing laptop, and see how long it holds. Then when it dies, see what laptop you can then buy for the money.
