i7 990 Build - What do you think?

Hey guys,

I'm about to return home from a tour of duty in Iraq, and I'm interested in buying an extreme gaming machine. While I'm not an expert in this area by any means, I've done quite a bit of comparison shopping before coming here to ask for advice/validation/comments. So I was wondering what you guys think about my future setup.

SONY Black Blu-ray Burner SATA BD-5300S-0B
$99.99

Intel Core i7-990X Extreme Edition 3.46GHz LGA 1366 130W Six-Core Desktop Processor
$999.99

CORSAIR Vengeance 24GB (6 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 Desktop Memory
$319.99

CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX850 V2 850W High Performance Power Supply
$139.99

HIS Radeon HD 6990 H699F4G4M Video Card with Eyefinity
$697.99

COOLER MASTER HAF X RC-942-KKN1 Black Steel/ Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case
$189.99

ASUS Sabertooth X58 ATX Intel Motherboard
$204.99

Grand Total:$2,652.93

OCZ Vertex 3 120GB SSD SATA III Storage Drive
297.99

I'm interested in reading what you all have to add or subtract from this. I tried to get the best of the best. I intend to learn from whatever info comes my way, even the trolling type.

Also, am I missing anything? Network card, fans maybe?

You dont need a 990x or 24gb of ram for gaming.

Edit: I feel reay bad for buying 6GB of ram for almost $500! I can't believe you can get 24gb for less than 400!

hmmmm....

One of my other hobbies involves a bit of cryptography... could this be useful for building precomputed hash tables? My little i3 laptop does 6million hashes per second. how radically would this be increased?

Note taken: Downgrade the i7 990 to something a bit softer. Any recommendations? The 2600 perhaps?

And the ram... that was just a deal available. I'll see if I can half it to 12GB and cut my costs a bit.

...It's a waste

2600K/2500K is fine for everything you might do, 24 gigs of ram is useless unless you do some serious video rendering, 6 gigs is fine for gaming...

Ahh... sandy bridge it is. I went with the i7 2600k and dropped to 8GB of ram, which I'm sure is more than enough, but It works out to be the cheapest deal.

You guys just saved me $1100. Greatly appreciated.

Hi there.first welcome back from your tour of duty in Iraq.
I have both i7 990x and a i7 2600 sb and i dont see any different
in the two cpus in gaming, and thats running them both at 5ghz.
So i would say go with the i7 2600 sb.

U dont need a 990x or 24gb ram at all,
I'm suggesting u a sensible gaming build,
cpu- intel i7 2600k ($289 microcenter)
mobo- asus p8p67 revolution ($259)
ram- 2x4gb corsair vengeance ($100)
gpu- 3x msi hd6970 crossfire ($942)
pc case- cooler master HAF-X 942 ($189)
psu- corsair tx950 ($149)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139013
ssd- crucial c300 sata3 128gb ($254)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148348
hdd- 1tb samsung sprinpoint F3 ($69)
optical drive- sony/lg blu ray burner ($99)
cpu cooler- corsair H70 ($99)
total- $2449
Its a overall cheaper build than yours yet its more powerful because it has 3 gpu,its extremely powerful.
Hope u like this setup,
