8800GTS SLI Replacement

Hi all

The time has come again to replace my video cards! After installing Crysis 2 and playing for a few minutes I come to realize I need a new card.

I am looking for a single card solution. I am looking to spend no more than $180 on a card. I know I may have to update my power supply as well...

I have looked around the forums but these days there are so many cards, and I am not sure which one to go with.

I would really like to stick with a 256-bit card at least. I am not a complete hardcore gamer. I casually game these days. I typically play at 1080 resolution.

Thanks for any help!

With a budget of US$180, the best is probably a GTX465: (with an unlock to a GTX470)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130557
(this model is at your budget after MIR)

As for your Antec True Power Trio 550W, I see that it has two native 6-pin PCIe connectors which are just needed by a GTX465/470. And, if you do not plan to highly overclock the card, I reckon it could be enough to do the job.

Thanks for the reply...

I am wondering if it will really be WORTH upgrading to the 465? I mean both my cards are 256bit and equal up to 1GB total of memory.

Maybe I am looking at it wrong.

I guess my question is.. is it really worth my time/money to upgrade my cards right now? I know the 8800gts are old cards.

8800's in SLI are still fairly fast. Is it a 1080p monitor? You might be able to find a good deal on the Sales here, and Newegg has a few 6850/GTX 460's that are under $180 shipped.

Edit: I failed to read lol. What kind of performance are they doing in Crysis 2 anyways?

Each 8800GTS 512 has its own 512MB VRAM to play with. The total amount is not doubled in the sense that it is still 512MB per core.

Performance wise, you definitely will see a noticeable gain in framerate as well as higher IQ.

Whether it is worth your time/money, you have to decide it for yourself as this is more an value question.
But if I have to say, as you said you are only a casual gamer...perhaps it is not worth it as you probably only play those big name games like Crysis and this kind of games do not come out very often. And, if you can accept lowering some graphic details in exchange of playable framerate, then there is no need to upgrade as upgrading for a game or two is not worthy, IMHO.

I will more than likely be purchasing BF3.

I wonder if a hd6870 or GTX 460/70 will run it without issues. I know BFBC2 stutters a lot with my current set up.
