Building a PC without a case?

Thread Starter
I was just wondering if this is at all feasible. Could you assemble components out of a case, and have them sit on a desk or something similar? How hot would the components get? Would a lot less cooling be required due to the lack of confinement that a case provides?

Thanks.

I do that all the time. Its fine. Monitor your mother board and cpu temps though. be aware that sunlight should not meet your setup.

You are really just negating any case airflow, the room ambient will be your reference temp. you may want to put a fan on your south and north bridge chips.

You will have to have a power switch to your motherboard, if it does not have one built in.

Yes and infact it's very common.

In terms of performance it's not going to be as cool as a case, but is a feasible short term option.

You could but i wouldn't recommend putting it on say a wooden desk because the motherboard can get very hot, due to the lack of a case your components may run say 5-10c cooler because they would be able to get colder air.

Alright, thanks for the replies.

What would you suggest I put the components in/on as a short-mid term solution?

Very much this! If you don't live in the woods, it's very likely that you'll find one near you for $10 dollars(or even free). Ebay, OC Marketplace or a local computer store is a good as any place to start your search.

If you do build without a case however, it's a good idea to have some cooling for the HDD's.

As a short term solution, a wood desk will be fine, as long as the motherboard is elevated somehow. You want the underside of the motherboard to have a bit of a clearing to keep it cool.

you dont need to find a power switch, just use your metallic screw driver to short out the 5 V to ground on the power pins and it should turn on if everything is properly connected.
