Don't think in terms of desktop graphics. It's most likely going to be based on a r700 chip with a slew of optimizations and improvements of later generations. Depending on the cooling solution is may be clocked very low to maintain a suitable TDP. There are so many variables that we don't know; this makes it difficult to speculate.

So it may be an awesome beefed up version of the r700. It may be a super stripped version. It may not be an r700 at all and this is just hogwash.

mmm, I so far like the sound of this. However I find it hard to see Nintendo's marketing strategy on this. Lets release something a little faster than a 360 that has motion controls. 360 is established and now has kinekt rubbish thing.

Stick in a blu ray with full backwards compatability to gamecube with upscaling and I may love nintendo again, briefly though.

DirectX is not possible without a HDD, me thinks.

I think most higher level APIs are like that.

It'd be like slapping 1GB on an 8400GS.
The form factor of a console is very small, so the GPU will most likely have to be cut down or downclocked.
I wasn't talking about GPU RAM, I was talking about system RAM, which is clearly lacking in current consoles (512MB shared on 360, and 256MB +256MB on PS3)

Comparing PC Hardware to Console Hardware is pretty pointless IMHO. Also this is just speculation. No official statements = Rumor. Whatever their next console will be, I'll buy it just to play the awesome first party titles that Ive loved since the 1980's. Mario and Zelda FTW

Why must Nintendo always put such dated hardware in their consoles? On the plus side, it'll be DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL, meaning the PC community might see some interesting games, possibly.
Nintendo's philosophy with the sixth generation of consoles have been about a low-power, low-cost box that is instantly profitable which the Wii was.

That is the upside... The downside is that you won't be using bleeding-edge tech like other consoles you're inevitably loosing out on the core audience.

This was the very reason the Wii was codenamed "Revolution" from the beginning because it was set to change the status-quo by being low-cost, instantly profitable with a new way of gaming.

At least have 2GB!

Hell, if it's from the R700 family then it COULD have a 4890!

Not bad.
The Wii only has 84MB of RAM so 512MB is significant and is good enough for 720p resolution. Most 4870s sold only shipped with 512MB of RAM and it's not as though they'll be using an RV700 GPU as we know them in the PC space. When has a console ever used hardware directly from the PC? It has always been a custom unit that's equal to similarly spec'd desktop.

But isn't that the point of having a console?

To get maximum lifespan?

So if they actually put decent hardware, then it can last them for years.
Like the 360 has lasted for years now and is expected to last longer?

I would like to see that link if you can find it. I believe it was Microsoft that was poised to use a variant of Fusion(Zacata is actually weaker than the package in the 360, don't let stream-processor-count fool you.. Llano, however, is good deal more powerful)

Microsoft's plan to combine the CPU/GPU onto the same die has been around since '07 called "Valhalla." They basically beat AMD to the punch and was only six months behind Intel so it's safe to say that AMD has pretty much won the contract for the nextBox like rumors suggested a few years ago.

Not bad for a corporation that owns no fabs.

A GTX570 runs 300-350 alone. Whereas a 4870 is less than half that. Since they will buy them in bulk, you are looking at a $70 card, give or take a few bucks.

I just want the ability to play hard care games as well as casual games. Will see...
You can't really put a price on it that way as they won't be buying graphics processor's straight from AMD. It'll be a designated chip which Nintendo will then outsource to be fabricated. Microsoft does this very thing with the 360.

It's not as if they're buying a stock-pile of 4870's, ripping them apart and then taking the GPU and sticking them in their dedicated boxes.

They pay for the design and take it elsewhere.

First, why another tri core processor? Thats not really pushing the envelope much for 2012 late release product, especially since next gen engines like unreal engine 3 can use 8 threads, and upcoming unreal engine 4 uses god knows how many, probably over 100. Even the upcoming PSP2 uses 4 cores.

Second why would you go with r700 and release at end of 2012? End of 2009 would make sense for 4870, but why not make the gpu a lower end dx 11 model? Why go with outdated chip?

No reason why this info would leak 18 - 20 months ahead of release, in fact, if youre using currently available hardware, why should development cycle for console take more than a few months.

I can see nintendo going with ibm again, and they are almost certain to use amd gpu, but I think this "leak is just a guess".

Who knows though, maybe nintendo is only trying to be 2-3 times more powerful than PS3,xBox 360? If that is the case though they are fools because by the end of 2012 I guarentee Microsoft or Sony will come of with new console, and their's will be top of the line, unlike Wii which was and is nothinig more than a controller gimmick.

All the grandmas that bought Wii arent gonna rush out to buy Wii 2 with fancy graphics. Nintendo better actually deliver a piece of quality hardware this time.
Because Nintendo isn't competing with the other console in terms of tech anymore. All of their previous attempts to introduce a new console that was powerful have cost them the generation. The direction that they took with the Wii was different and it literally payed-off for them.

I don't see Nintendo abandoning that philosophy anytime soon, so yes. You can expect Microsoft and Sony to leap-frog Wii 2 in terms of tech sometime after 2012.

I agree - the R700 is 2008 technology and is pretty pathetic since it's 2011.

Yes, I know very well that the devs can harness a lot more out of a GPU since the consoles are static, but if they put in an even better GPU (like the next gen xbox / playstation will inevitably) we'll see some stellar graphics for years to come.
It's not pathetic as most people still play games on a R700-class GPU or similar and are playing on high settings and this type of hardware inside a console is a good upgrade over current Wii hardware.

You are in the minority when it comes to wii users there.

And whats with everyone freaking out about the graphics, I have to say with a group of 8 people I have had way more fun bowling (omg even not in 1080).

I think you guys are missing why the wii was successful, and it had nothing to do with the lack of graphics.

Xbox and PS3 will be quaking in their boots right now R700 GPU will add quite a punch to the Wii2 compared to the first Wii, And considering the Xbox is only equivalent to around the 7800gtx and the PS3 is about the same.

Hopefully Microsoft and Sony will stop their bulls**t console revisions and make a damn console with a better GPU to at least make console ports a little better. Im tired of games that barely use the power of a GTX400/500 HD5000/6000
