First time build?

Well here is my very first plan, I'm very very new to PC building so forgive my ignorance. I want my PC as a workstation, good multitasking, photoshopping, internet browsing and play Wow :3. I also want my PC to be easily upgradable so I'm going to be spending a bit more on my case which must be full tower (this is going to be a long term thing). I already have a HDD and mouse, keyboard and OS I can get whenever (or use from my other PC's). I've tried to do some research so and tried to stick with the main brands but tell me what you think. Also my budget is about £300 but I would like to be under that.

Very nice case choice, fingerprint/dust-magnet but it's nice. The parts look fine, like that you have not cheaped out on the PSU. The PSU is the hey to your rig. Would go for a nice chip though imo

YAY!!! I thought I would have got it all wrong tongue.gif

I can easily upgrade the chip later where as the rest I can't really also for RAM I am going to go for one stick of 2GB Corsair RAM for about £20
post #4 of 18
This computer won't play wow on max settings, believe me. You'll need a graphics card that's not onboard and a quad core cpu. Let me find you some parts.

EDIT** Since the budget is really tight, you won't be able to get a full tower and play wow for 300£. I got this for you which should work well but its really tight in budget:
Asus M4A78LT
Xigmatek Asagard
CM 500w elite
Athlon II x4 640
Corsair XMS3 2x2gb 1600 cl9
Sony DVD burner
Scan Fx 5770
Total is 334.15£ including shipping, this is really the cheapest you can go if you want to play at decent settings. If you cheap out, you will LAG, trust me.
Good luck biggrin.gif

I would reconsider just 2 gigs of ram. you should have 2 sticks for 4gigs total for most modern games and programs (operating systems), especially if you are using photoshop. Plus Amd boards run in dual channel, which requires 2 sticks.

u dont need a full tower case for a m-atx build,
get cooler master HAF 912 $59/cooler master elite 430 $40 & invest the saved money on a gpu like hd5770 $100,
for the ram u can also try kingston hyperX 1600mhz for the same price.
Hope this helps u

i used a similar board/cpu combo in a micro build for my nephew (m4a785td-m with the 4200 onboard)
4200 onboard gpu works good for ut2k4 style games on max, can play some newer games on low (crysis 1 on ultra low is playable)

for the cpu, get this x3 450, slightly more, 3.2g with one more core, and can possibly unlock to a quad
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-athlon-ii-x3-450-rana-triple-core-s-am3-32ghz-15mb-cache-ht-4000mhz-95w-retail

get better ram tho, 1600 with cl8 or better (2x2g would be preferred)
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-(2x2gb)-corsair-xms3-classic-ddr3-pc3-12800-(1600)-non-ecc-unbuffered-cas-8-8-8-24-xmp-165v

if you want to play newer games get a dedicated gpu

Aniket - I want a full sized case so I can upgrade over time smile.gif

ffejrxx - Okay I will consider some better RAM

Thanks to both of you biggrin.gif

You really can't go wrong getting a nice tower case if you're planning on computing as a hobby. My HAF 932 is a joy to work inside, and it is nice to not be bound by what will fit in your case when you decide to upgrade components. The Phantom you're getting is nice, just make sure you have an idea of where the PCI-E slots with your GPU(s) are going to be - that big side fan looks like it is situated a little high, which might not get optimal air on your GPU(s).

You will want to find a way to squeeze in a quad core processor, dedicated video and 4GB of RAM. And, you may want at least 2 16x PCI-E slots (running @ 8x/8x when running dual GPUs) to allow you to add a second GPU later, depending on what GPU you want.

What kind of monitor are you using? The resolution you're playing at kind of determines what you need in regard to GPU power, which determines what you need in a PSU and maybe MB...

I'm not too worried about running WoW on max (in fact I'm currently running it on lowest possible).

My monitor size is pretty small (I think 18") and 1204 by 728 res smile.gif

I use PS on a little laptop at the moment and tbh I have never had very good PCs so I'm completely used to lots of lag smile.gif

Thanks again, I will edit in new RAM tomo biggrin.gif

EDIT - I'm not fussed about playing latest PC games, that's why I have an Xbox (controllers/pad will always reign when it comes to gaming) so that's why I wanted to make the most of the onboard GPU and save monies tongue.gif
