Low FPS on Minecraft?

Thread Starter
Hey there, I hope somebody can help me out here... I recently purchased a graphics card because Minecraft was extremely slow with my 64mb one... But now I've got an even lower framerate and I'm seeing strange grids around every block. I get around 7frames per second on Tiny/Fast...

Can someone help me out please?
I have the latest version of Java and these are my specs:

Intel Xeon 3.06Ghz (I have two of these)
Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit
2GB RAM
This graphics card (Sapphire HD 4650 1GB DDR2 Dual DVI Out AGP Graphics Card)

Anything else needed to know? Please help... I get a perfect framerate on Counter Strike but on here I get a terrible one...

Thanks a lot smile.gif

[If it helps, I have the latest drivers for my graphics card]

minecraft hogs alot of memory for me so maybe that might be it? But 2gigs should be fine. Did you set the graphics to fast instead of fancy and play around with the view distance? i've noticed i actually lag more when i set the view distance to low (lots of fog) than when i set it to high.

Is the Xeon a single core chip? Seeing as your computer is AGP and with only 2Gb of ram, there might be other things setting you back.

Even with an AMD dual core in my mom's laptop the game still lags and the CPU is at %100 load at the lowest settings.

I have adjusted the settings but I still get a terrible framerate. I tried Minecraft Classic a minute ago and I get a stable 140fps... Strange.

Yeah I knew that. Can you give me info on specifically what chip is it?

minecraft shouldnt run that slow

ok heres the deal with minecraft. its 99.9% HARD DRIVE, memory, and cpu. Your gfx card doesnt really do a whole damn lot. I mean, it matters - if you are using and intel igp or something you will suffer but ANYTHING decent will do just fine...

Your gfx card isnt particularly beefy, but honestly it should manage just fine. That means you are bottlenecking on your CPU, RAM, or HDD. if you are playing on a multiplayer server, you can replace most HD activity with network traffic.

So heres the question. Are you playing online or offline? What kind of network and HD are you running?

Yeah doesnt sound like a particularly fast HD. Fragmentation can seriously screw you over with minecraft too, since the more you explore the more tiny little files are created that can get scattered ALLLLLL over your HD. Windows defragmenter wont help this since each individual file is tiny and is unlikely to become fragmented itself, but if your HD has to read 30 different locations on your HD every time you look at a new area you are kinda screwed wink.gif

Also how fast is that RAM of yers?
