Windows defragmenter wont help this since each individual file is tiny and is unlikely to become fragmented itself, but if your HD has to read 30 different locations on your HD every time you look at a new area you are kinda screwed wink.gif

Also how fast is that RAM of yers?

Ah, damn. Do you recommend I get a new HD, or isn't it THAT necessary?

Now, don't laugh... I'm no good with RAM and it came like this with my PC:

Judging by that, I'm guessing it's 133mhz? That's terrible, right?

LOL you have some sort of Frankenstein rig there bud. You could do with a HD and RAM upgrade but honestly at this point you are looking at putting a lot of money into an already obsolete system.

Depends on if you are willing to spend some cash and if so, do you really want to spend it upgrading this rig or building a new one? Here at OCN we really do like to encourage people to build rather than buy since you can get much better deals, learn a lot in the process, and its just downright fun. It seems intimidating but its really not too hard and we would be willing to help

At any rate if you arnt really interested in upgrading/replacing your rig, there are still a few tweaks you can do software-wise that might help.

I would recommend using some mods to speed up the game a bit.
There were a couple, google them. I forgot the name of it sorry.
What is your memory usage while playing?

Hmm, damn. I really don't want to upgrade or build my own PC, simply because I don't have the money for it. Thanks a lot anyway I'll just have to somehow live with this PC, haha. Minecraft isn't too important anyway, and if Counter Strike runs fine for me, then I'm happy with that.

Thanks for the help Also, what would you suggest, software-wise that I use?

Optimine doesn't really help a lot, thanks anyway

Take a look at that. It is a method to improve chunck rendering. Also, try running in normal render distance with "limit frames" on. Limiting frames is a good use of improving CPU performance.

Indeed I forgot the names as well. Minecraft is shining example of spaghetti code and a few industrious fans have recompiled it in much neater and more efficient ways.

Unfortunately pretty much all versions of this have some rather glaring issues... fluids not working or damage not working or some such...

google them and see if any of them would work for you (break a feature you dont care for anyway)

Also, like i said if you can manage to get all your minecraft files into one section of your HD (you need a defragmenter that will do this, as opposed to simply defragmenting the files which have themselves become fragmented and randomly moving them... this is somewhat dubious because it doesnt follow the windows defrag api and therefore has the potential to screw things over) I cant really recommend you any off the top of my head... but keep in mind they are usually OS specific.

Another thing you can do is make sure you are forcing it to use a gig or even 1.5 gigs of your memory. The more ram you are using, the less it will be looking up stuff in your HD.

Last thing you want to do is find the mod that recompiles the save system. currently saving is done on an extremely frequent basis and every save requires an overwrite of previous files or creation of new files on the HD. This mod caches these to RAM and then does a whole batch of writes all at once. It will cause you to have a second or two of bad lag on a somewhat regular basis, but will cause your fps to skyrocket at all other times.

I'm not sure if that'll help, sorry. If not, how can I find out my what my chip is called?
Well, with two of those you shouldn't be bottlenecked. As posted above this post it can also be the HDD. Go to your start menu, click on all programs, Accessories, system tools, and then click on disk defragmenter. See how much your disk is fragmented and take your time to defrag the disk.

You can also later try and re-install the game in case currupted files have built up.

Thanks everybody for their useful posts, I think I've found a solution (for now); I've turned Smooth Lighting off (thanks Zero!) and set Javaw.exe to 'High' and I get a nice stable 30fps on Far and Fast... Thanks again everybody and I'll also take a look at the game improving mods.

Sounds good. Hit me a PM at some point if you have any more issues or want to squeeze a bit of performance later. I run a minecraft server and do mods for my friends so I'm somewhat savvy with the noodle cup that is minecraft code
