I could go on for days about how this study is ridiculous.

They did this with a regression analysis. So they already go in with the assumption that the variables they looked at are not independent of one another, rather than test if they are not independent of one another.

So in some cases it is and some it isn't. There's nothing concrete here to make the assumption or correlation. Little Johny is depressed because he plays videos while Timmy plays video games because he's depressed. Therein lies the problem. You can't prove anything with this study.

Hai guyz! Just because most coked out alcoholic street bums are homeless doesn't mean alcohol and cocaine caused their homelessness! Correlation does not equal causation fellas! Don't you know that???! So until I have 100% solid evidence that alcohol and drug addiction causes homelessness I will continue to believe that it doesn't!!!

So then if I drink, I'll lose my house? Either way, drugs didn't cause it. Many homeless turn to drugs after they hit the streets. Conversely, many people turn to drugs out of depression itself. Is depression the cause of homelessness then?

Students that incur sadness while gaming are obviously bad and should not play.

If you are genetically predisposed to alcoholism or drugs, then doing those things will probably increase your chances of being addicted to them. I get it, depression leads to using drugs as well, but ignoring the fact that drugs ALSO worsen/add to the problem is ignorant.

Some kid who's predisposed to suffering from depression or social anxiety shouldn't isolate himself in his room and play 8 hours straight of Warcraft every day.

Is computer addiction easy to develop because of cultural norms and easy access? Yes. Does game playing cause depression? Not likely. Does gaming addiction worsen depression? Probably. Does gaming addiction make it harder for someone to make friends and socialize? Yes. Is gaming/computer addiction in some ways worse for the average teenager than drugs, since it tends to fly under the radar, is much more accessible and is much more socially acceptable? Yes.

I swear, these kids once learned the line "correlation does not equal causation" and use it whenever they can to rationalize a problem that is affecting thousands upon thousands of people.

Yes, gaming doesn't CAUSE depression/suicide, but for many young kids who are already having issues with mild depression (and which teenager doesn't????), it can probably make it worse, much worse. Why hand a kid the only thing that can make his situation any worse? Why not get him a gym membership so he can work out and feel better instead of sitting at his desk playing World of Warcraft with his bloodshot eyes, cheeto-stained fingertips and his dirty underwear?
