If you are genetically predisposed to alcoholism or drugs, then doing those things will probably increase your chances of being addicted to them. I get it, depression leads to using drugs as well, but ignoring the fact that drugs ALSO worsen/add to the problem is ignorant.
Some kid who's predisposed to suffering from depression or social anxiety shouldn't isolate himself in his room and play 8 hours straight of Warcraft every day.
Is computer addiction easy to develop because of cultural norms and easy access? Yes. Does game playing cause depression? Not likely. Does gaming addiction worsen depression? Probably. Does gaming addiction make it harder for someone to make friends and socialize? Yes. Is gaming/computer addiction in some ways worse for the average teenager than drugs, since it tends to fly under the radar, is much more accessible and is much more socially acceptable? Yes.
I swear, these kids once learned the line "correlation does not equal causation" and use it whenever they can to rationalize a problem that is affecting thousands upon thousands of people.
Yes, gaming doesn't CAUSE depression/suicide, but for many young kids who are already having issues with mild depression (and which teenager doesn't????), it can probably make it worse, much worse. Why hand a kid the only thing that can make his situation any worse? Why not get him a gym membership so he can work out and feel better instead of sitting at his desk playing World of Warcraft with his bloodshot eyes, cheeto-stained fingertips and his dirty underwear?
