Well, Sadly I was not fast enough for the sale hehe :3. Soo after much, much, much! thinking and talking to my cousin I am going with a 6990.

I have seen it overclocks really well so it matches a pair of 6970s with out the heat produced by xfire, it can probably go further easier, and well I am trying to make it future proof as far as GPUs go. I can easily add in a 6970 or another 6990 in the futre since there will be a free slot. Not so much if Im already CF unless I get a new mobo.

Edit: can anyone recommend a good brand right now? as far as 69** series go.

I agree with the heat side of things, but even with overclocking, when you OC a set of 6970's I still doubt it will be as quick. I assume you're only going to be using one monitor with this setup. If that's the case then you're golden, if you're going for surround monitors then go with 6970's in SLi to save money on the active display port and better performance.

perhaps you are right on the OC side of things, I have only seen stocks speeds and benches on all the high end cards right now. I dont think I would be bothered with 3-5 less FPS when these monsters are already pushing 60+ on 1920x1200 . If the urge for more power should arise 6970 will be bought . or OC >.>, I dont have much patience for the GPU OC though lol...or cpu... <,<.
(not bad for the 6990, is it not underclocked? or is that the gtx590?)
