Well as far as I know the only products that use IPS from Apple are the Cinema Display, Ipad, and Iphone 4. Their laptop lines do not carry IPS, I've checked specs.

Black Ops won't run on either laptop comfortably, but thats just because its black ops.

Honestly just go with the mac, since its a much better choice for a student. You can argue all you want about other options but nothing beats it in battery life, build quality and looks.
Uhm just to let you know build quality, and battery life have been beaten already. Take a look at other offerings, particularly in the business department from HP, Dell, and Lenovo. Looks is subjective, so I won't go there. I am not a fan of a notebook that looks more like a fashion statement then it's primary function: being a laptop.

Yeah, you're right. What the hell was I reading about then? Are there even laptops with IPS displays? Or did I just dream that?

Ultimately the OP shouldn't be comparing these two products since they are aimed at two different groups.

The Asus G series from the same year will trounce a Mac in gaming and there is no way anyone can argue against that. But to be fair Macs aren't made for gamers, then again, neither is Black OPs.

There used to be 2-3 IPS laptops in the past. 2 if I remember correctly being Fujitsu tablets, however they were discontinued. The 3rd I forgot what brand/model. In the present the only laptop atm with an IPS screen is the HP Elitebook workstation 15"-17" with the Dreamcolor 2 IPS screen. It is hands down the best LCD for a laptop available in the market, and after market. The only thing I can think of that may be able to compete with it is perhaps some of Fujitsu's outdoor screens (unsure what LCD technology they are using, not IPS but definitely not TN my sister has one), but it's not even a close comparison just the closest.

Between those two, the G53 without a doubt. If you want another possible suggestion, the M14x. The G53 will probably have a better GPU, slightly better at that, but the battery life improves along with weight reducing as well. ^_^

I hate Apple but I have to appreciate their influence on the consumer market on what people have thought about quality. Their products can sometimes be amazing and I have to say that they did a good job on the MacBooks.

Ive had the latest macbook pro and I sold it for the G73JH. I used it for typical stuff like web browsing, email, web design. The problem was when I did any gaming on it it was really close to overheating. Plus going from a dual core and a little better then integrated graphics to a quad core and a 5870m is a huge difference.

+1 for the G53
