Did you underclock?

Thread Starter
hey, I have a burning question about the CPU voltages. Let me know if you underclocked because your overclocked CPU was not stable anymore even though you were convinced that it was 24/7 stable and have been running it for ages. What was your Vcore?
thanks.

PS: by the number of views you can see how many people didn't have this problem.

You would normally raise voltages if your CPU wasn't stable not lower them - most people that have this happen didn't have the proper voltages set in the first place, and didn't do enough stability testing (only did "game stable") instead of for instance running Prime95 for 24hours

yes you would raise the volts but that is when you are doing your initial overclock. What I wanted to say is that you had it running stable for weeks to infinity... get it?

Underclock equates to lowering clock speed, but is that what you're referring to or undervolting?

I underclocked when my water cooling sprung a leak and I went back to air, and realized in real world applications there is no difference between 3.2GHz and 3.6GHz. Plus I can run 3.2 on stock volts, so even in high ambient on air it runs cool.

i have never done this. usually raise the voltage not lower it. i only lower when im trying to find the lowest voltage for a stock cpu speed. example right now im down clocking both my cpu. one running at 3.0ghz (3024mhz) @ 1.175v and I'm still dropping the vcore after 50 passes of LinX. the other cpu is at 2.9 Ghz @ about 1.15 (dont remember might be lower)

I guess you will be doing both since the CPU is not stable any more

Lol, i still dont get it- underclock means lower than stock clocks. Except for the low clock challange why would anybody do that. You mean something like : My CPU is stable @3,7GHz and if it`s unstable i go back to 2,7Ghz so im under stock clocks?!
If thats what you want to ask then ??? I dont get it ... And if you mean downclock from 3,7 to 3,6 : No i wouldn`t do that -> retweak the settings till it is stable again. Still confused...

You'd only "underclock" under those circumstances.. undervolting would only make the instability worse, not better.

I had my Barton XP running at 2.2G (I think) for ages, but a few months ago I had to put it back to stock because it started to freeze. I run the prime and what do you know it it failed it. So there you go my story of underclocking my overclock. It lasted about 6 years on 2.2GHz. LOL

I just got my i7 and and trying to determine what i should be running it at, ie what volts.
