    Go back to air!

I'm perplexed. I currently have a really nice custom water loop setup, but I'm getting tired of worrying about the potential of a leak (2.2TB of data in the case) and having to constantly think if I need to do any up keep to the loop.
I probably would have already went back to air by now, but I'm rather intimidated at the prospect of having to reinstall the stock NB/SB cooler on my E760. There aren't any tutorials on how to reinstall it (or could I just follow the same steps as installing the water block?).
The second reason I haven't gone back to air is the fact it's going to limit my OC potential. I'm currently at ~4.2Ghz @ 1.31 with HT on, and I know that I won't be able to come close to that if I do reinstall my Megahalems.

Now, I realize that I'm posting this in the air cooling section of the forum and will probably get a lot of pro-air responses, but it seems the general cooling section doesn't get a lot of traffic, LOL!

I'm going to be away from the internets for the night, so I'll probably be following up to any responses in the morning.

Why not just back up your data? Is there any particular reason to expect a leak?

I wouldn't worry so much. If you built it carefully there isn't a huge chance of a leak. As for maintaining your loop.... just add some water every few months.

I do, but I worry a lot when it comes to my photo collection. I suppose if I perfected my backup solution, I'd feel more at ease with the situation. I tried the online backup service Carbonite, but that took FOREVER to upload and after I had to reinstall Windows, I couldn't just reconnect it, I had to download everything I uploaded to restore it...stupid service. Enough of my rant, LOL!

Yeah, I spent like $3-$400 on fittings alone, so you'd think I'd feel kinda at ease, LOL! It freaks me out when I hear a bubble moving around in a block.

Once I went back to Air Cool from WC loop since 2010. I have no problem with WC loop, and Love WC Loop, but hate to take it down and clean dust out of radiator every 2 months.

To me it seems you are focusing your concern at the wrong problem here. You feel as though you are not adequately backing up your data in case of disaster, but you are deflecting your worries at your cooling system.

Not trying to be a jerk, so please don't take it that way.

Data loss and recovery is potential problem whether you are using water or air to cool your machine. My suggestion would be to hammer out a bulletproof backup/restore system for yourself so that you don't have to worry about it. Device failure is going to happen even if you go back to air cooling. Your best bet it to focus your energy on getting your backups sound so that when if and when it does happen, you'll be prepared.

Don't worry, I didn't take offense to anything...and you're probably right.

For now, I think I'll just keep the loop and consider going back to air when I upgrade to a LGA 2011 setup...depending on how well the CPU's OC on air

Thank you all for your responses! + rep! *runs off to Micro Center to buy a 3TB drive*

Instead of spending money to buy a new air cooler, why not just buy another 2TB HDD and just backup a majority of your stuff there, put the HDD in a anti static bag and stow it away in a closet?

Ah nm, looks like Op is going to get a 3TB drive, good for you

You're worried. You should not worry. You will not stop worrying as long as you have water in your case. Go back to air.

NB/SB - try aftermarket coolers.

Of course you're not going to get that OC with a Megatron unless you get a really loud fan. Get a Silver Arrow for $75 and be done with it. It's just barely compatible with G.Skill Ripjaws RAM, so you're OK.

Or you could get a SA and a triplet of louder fans (the SWiF2-120P's are just an example), or an NH-D14.

If you really need to cool your motherboard, get a Prolimatech Genesis with three fans (here, here, here).

Unlike when you got your Megahalems, you now have a number of excellent heatsinks to choose from. In fact, if you take care to make your case into a quiet wind tunnel, you can most likely retain your current OC.
