Question Re: Windows Server 2008 + Dreamspark

Is it legal if my friend that goes to UCF gives me his key for Windows Server 2008? I won't be using it for business purposes, other than to just learn about it and use it locally on VMware.

Note: I'll be using the trial for Windows Server 2008 R2, and once the trial expires, I'll use the product key. Will this work?

It might not technically be 100% legal, but I think microsoft really couldn't care less if you use it for learning purposes. The thing is, if you knwo how server 2008 works, chances are you'll buy it later. That's why MS has the dreamspark site.

Yes, you can use the trial with the key. Yes you can use your friends key, as long as it is not used on both computers at the same time.

I think the Dreamspark version is x32 though. If he has MSDNAA he can probably get you the x64 bit key for free.

I doubt Dreamspark server 2008 R2 is x86 (32 bits), as far as I'm aware R2 is x64 only.

It's not legal unless you're his immediate family. I have 2 Win 7 keys from school, and they're installed on my, and my wife's computers, which does comply with the laws, but giving it to your anyone that doesn't live in your household or to a friend is illegal, not that it doesn't happen though....
