Tcase: The thermal specification shown is the maximum case temperature at the maximum Thermal Design Power (TDP) value for that processor. It is measured at the geometric center on the topside of the processor integrated heat spreader.

That is the overall temp of the chip itself... not just the processors. the temp MAX the metal part of the chip should reach.

I wouldn't risk running it above 73C because then you will start to see degradation and need more volts for the same overclock. It will happen if you let it get above 73C for extended period of time.

no i agree... you are supposed to run it under full, normal, load at 15 to 20 under the TJ max.

I just don't want people to get their temps confused.
I'd assume the same could be said about Tcase, it may be 73C but you prolly want to keep it to 55C or so

but back to the initial question. I am running a 2500k and a Hyper 212+ my idle temp is 27C
and I will have to get back to you on my Prime 95 results... but i think its in the low 70s. IBT with AVX is a whole 'nother world though.

Haha... well this is my first ever OCing, not to mention the first time I've built a PC. I'm just worried all over the place.

@Sohryu76 and robwadeson
Ahh, okay, I understand the difference now. Thanks.

As for an update... I'm going through the Newbies OCing guide right now trying to figure out why I'm having problems. I can't find any stability past 4.3GHz. I've tried pumping like 1.33v into it and it still bluescreens on 4.4GHz after a few minutes of Prime. I've done research and seen people getting 4.5GHz at like 1.9v and under, so I'm guessing I'm doing something wrong. It doesn't help that I'm getting a 0.5v vdroop.
...but my temps are still staying below 62!

and you have a K? that should OC to 3.7 without an issue... leave everything on auto and just set the multiplier to 37
if that doesnt work, you need to RMA your chip.
your voltages will vary.

Awww man...I just went directly to multi of 40 with stock volts and was jazzed that I barely broke 65ºC in IBT AVX after 20 passes!

Now that I'm sitting at 4.5 with a minor increase in volts, temps actually reach 73ºC in IBT AVX after 20 passes, but Prime95 never gets above 63ºC....so I'm leaving Sandy right where she is cause believe you/me....4.5ghz is SMOKIN fast!!

I prefer my 4.9GHz

Whoops, my bad. I meant 4.5GHz. Wherever I mentioned GHz in the 3s, consider them 4s. Those were absent minded typos.
And yes I do have a K.

really though your results will vary when it comes to voltages.
I could get 4.9 on 1.368 easy, and alot of others couldn't.

just have to play with what works for you, and not what other people have.
