Command 'Startx' results in black screen

Hey! So I have been checking out backtrack4 and when ever I type 'startx' (to start the GUI) it goes to a black screen/stops displaying and my monitor starts cycling through inputs looking for a signal. It works fine on my brother's pc however. So what's the deal? Any idea how I can fix this? Don't know if this is relevant but I am using HDMI @1080P and the video card is a HD3450. could be the use of the hdmi with the hd3450, ati has issues with linux most times, cause ati hasn't produced any quality drivers.

are you using it as a livecd or did you install it?

the first command configures a new xorg.conf file for you against the hardware on the current machine, then the second one copies that new file created over the existing /etc/X11/xorg.conf file giving your x server a better chance of starting up smile.gif

if you dont know much about linux, i suggest trying an easier distro... if you are interesting in pen-testing/security-auditing you might want to check out blackbuntu as its just a tad easier for newer users and almost as powerful as backtrack

X -configure = configures the x server to use with your graphics card and monitors resolution. it creates a new file in your home folder called xorg.conf.new.

cp ~/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf = this will copy the file in your home directory called xorg.conf.new and rename it to xorg.conf, /etc/X11 is where the configuration file for X server is located. sorry forgot some of the command.

so do this at the cli:

X -configure
cp ~/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
startx

Alright. I'm back! Got some new infoz and what not.
I ran 'X -configure' and the screen flashed and then listed this...
Told me my config file is /root/xorg.conf.new
So then I proceeded to do this... 'cp /xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf' which did not work. I then tried 'cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf' and the result was just that it went to the next line and listed no information. I assumed that meant it worked??? Either way then I 'startx' and the result is the same. Hear sound but no display. Also when I had ran 'X -configure' it told me to type (trying to remember) X -config /root/xorg.conf.new to test it or something like that, and I tried that as well but it resulted in nothing at all except a black screen and no display.
So did I do that right? And if so... then what now? Thanks once again in advance!
