OK I will post my thoughts from the demo.
Civ 5 is a turn based strategy game that where you choose a population and work hard to expand your empire. You do this through building workers to plow the land and mine for natural sources of wealth, creating an army to defend your cities as well as heading out onto enemy territory to build experience points and capture opposing lands.
You can make friends with other civilizations through a number of means; you can complete a mission for them which requires to to defeat a nation that civ is disputing with, or you can offer gifts of gold or even a few army troops. You may also trade with other nations so that you both mutually benefit. This does not equate to friendship however. Navigating your way around is simple, although my simple brain had trouble figuring out what to do at first. Fortunately you have 4 personal advisers to guide you towards a new course of action. Your military advisor provides intel pertaining to rival armed forces, whereas your economic advisor will update you on your peoples happiness levels and whether building a pyramid when your barely have enough food to feed the workers is feasible etc.
You can move people around by pointing and clicking in the location of your choice. I think they can only move a couple of hexagons before stopping. After you have made a choice(what to build, what to research, where to go, peace treaties etc) all of the other AI characters will continue their advance. Remember that you are racing against them in the bid for global dominance. They also send out troops to scout, and settlers to build cities close to yours, increasing their empire and essentially backing you into a corner if you are not careful.
I think you will only realise the power of this game once you play it. There is a free demo on steam that you can download to see if you will like it.
