Questions regarding Linux

Thread Starter
Hey there guys

My mother called me today asking if i can build her a computer. Her current rig fizzled out on her and now she wants a new one, but she's on a very tight budget so I'm trying to keep the price to a minimum, and I'll start with the OS.

Got a couple of questions about linux

1. How user friendly is Linux? *read this already but i prefer an answer from personal experience than reading a professional article about it*

2. Microsoft office? is there an alternative if i'm to give her a linux OS?

3. Can you suggest any, well, the most easiest to use version of Linux?

4. Would you recommend me to use Linux for my mother?

Thanks a lot ^_^
i did searching, found answers, but wasnt convinced.. the answers from the search i got was too 'textbook' for me...

^_^

Ubuntu would be a pretty safe bet
easy to use, pretty fast, looks nice,
and you can install OpenOffice as and Office replacement

Linux is much easier than Windows, and certainly more secure, for most people's day to day usage. Your mom will have no trouble, so long as she knows what icons to click on.

All major distros are replacing OpenOffice with LibreOffice in the next update cycle (e.g. Ubuntu 11.04, Fedora 15). Prepare for the name change.

Most people will recommend Ubuntu, though I suggest you try some different distributions out for yourself first, especially if you intend to give it to your mom.

hmm.. I downloaded and 'tried' to install kubuntu 10.10, but before the download ends, the computer shuts itself down between 50%-80%..

i thought maybe its a bad download so i tried to install it again, same thing happened, this time im thinking it might be the computer itself. But no, it's not the computer... Because i ubuntu 10.10 works and it doesnt shut itself down...

any reason why installing kubuntu half way shuts the pc down? thanks ^_^

Hmmm, i can't remember what the main screen after choosing the Language is..

But there should be a, "more options" or "options" there and you have to press one of the "F keys"

And what are the specs of your moms computer?

Got a couple of questions about linux

1. How user friendly is Linux? *read this already but i prefer an answer from personal experience than reading a professional article about it*
i could spend all day answering this question and still not cover it .

user friendly is very subjective, as i know plenty of people who don't even know how to do simple things in windows, and from an experienced/professional users of linux opinion on this subject matter, of course we are going to say it is "easy". it is what you make of it, as long as your mom is willing to learn it, it will be as easy as the level of her comprehension when it comes to computers.

there are actually several to choose from, depending on what all she needs, if she needs the full office suite, there honestly isn't really any replacement for MS office at all, open/libre office is a suitable replacement for the most part, for personal use, but its not a perfect clone and still suffers from some issues.

if she just needs a word processor, there are tons of those, i personally like abiword, as it is fast and lightweight and a very simple interface.

3. Can you suggest any, well, the most easiest to use version of Linux?

4. Would you recommend me to use Linux for my mother?
my own mother can barely use a 1993 gameboy that she has had for almost 20 years playing games on (i got it for xmas one year, about a month later, she wanted to "try" it out and i never got it back, surprisingly it still works, and she doesn't like the new slim ones they came out with or any of the ds).

putting my own mother in front of a computer even with windows on it, would be a disaster waiting to happen. what level of expertise would you say your mother has when it comes to computer use? i would assume she isn't a ITT person, as she called you to build her a new one

when it comes to ease of use, i would suggest:

*buntu's (ubuntu and/or its spins.)

linux mint

fedora (its pretty easy, and has a great community, since it developed partially by redhat.)

opensuse

mandriva

this is actually not a very easy question(s) to answer, as there are tons of great "noob" distro's out there, all with a good amount of backing behind them. since you know your mother best, why don't you give them all a shot in a vmware or dedicated a spare harddrive or freespace to their installs and play around with them for a few days, as you most likely will be an outlet for your mother if and when she has questions or problems, so you might as well brush up on the basics of linux
