Paid - Dont be silly

Free - Avast

Avast 5 is light, simple and very good in doing its job without nagging you with adverts or popups.

Just give this thread 24 hours and watch how many avast users will show support

Microsoft Security Essentials, in my opinion. It's free, does the job, and stays out of your way when you don't want to see it .

paid - kaspersky

free - microsoft security essentials

BUT what ever you get add this:

http://www.threatfire.com/

its very light on resources and is supposed to act as a seperate layer, it catches anything your main AV misses, its very very good and free!

I personally use MSE and Common sense and love it, have it installed on all computers in the house and having no issues so far. No annoying pop ups and scans dont slow down the computers.

Malwarebyte is more of scan program to use when your computer is in trouble, which is why MSE plus malwarebyte combo is the best free protection there is, with of course, Common sense
So you are right blue.
Indeed, with just alittle common sense you can avoid most vira

EDIT:
Imo its:
Paid - NOD32
Free - MSE

Personally I use avast with malwarebytes and super antispyware never had a problem. I used to use avg but things can slip through( it is not as good as it used to be) unfortunately, avast bogs down older systems. my gf's Athlon xp 1800 slows down alot when you first open apps. ( good thing she is getting a major overhaul
