I know a guy that I used to work with that made anywhere from 1-10 K a month on the side playing online poker.
Sure you win some and you lose some, but it is not like you are in a Casino where the odds are always against you, you are playing other people. When the online poker (and Texas holdem in general) was at its height, there was tons of people coming and throwing money into online gambling, and many of them hardly even knew how to play. Imagine being an game Ace and pwning noobs, except you get real money instead. Sure most people start off playing the small tables, but it is still easy money. A lot of the newbs try out the bigger tables too soon, which even better for the Aces.
Anyway you look at it, online poker makes a lot of people a lot of money, and the gov will do whatever they can to get their cut or shut it down.
