Gigabyte has made its last P67 mainboard and cancelled all future production - that's the stunning news that has just filtered into KitGuru's newsroom. Shocking stuff, but is it real and, if so, what does it mean. KitGuru heads for the underground carparks to find out, deepthroat style.
Having shown off a very early board at the start of March 2011, at CeBIT in Hannover - it was known that Gigabyte was far down the line with its research into the new technology. The huge upheaval caused by the total recall of initial Sandy Bridge products seems to have helped the mainboard maker make a decision about its future direction.
Straight to Z68, do not pass go and do not order any more of those P67 chip things.
Eh. I want a P67 for myself. I dont mind that whole SSD caching thing, I dont trust Lucid with GPU virtualization yet, I dont want my graphics to be Integrated when not gaming.
I think all future Gigabyte boards will come with EFI/UEFI or whatever it is.. Since they said they would be adding uefi for current ones for you to flash or something..

Yea, I can see this will be somewhat more than P67 boards, and right now some really good ones can be had for a fair price.
Part of me wants the blue Gigabyte boards back (but not rainbow coloured slots.. blue/white worked way better). The black P67 boards were really ugly I think. Looked more like the board had pubes on it. Well thats what I was reminded off.. :/

I guess I'd best be buying that P8p67 evo soon.

Yeah, SSD caching is worse than using a real decent size SSD and Hydra is so utterly useless for mutiple GPU scaling it's only use will be for super low power HTPCs that don't need to use a discreet GPU very often.
I asked awhile back if Gigabyte ever planned to release further P67 boards, like a UD9 for example, since I wanted their flagship P67 board. They indicated that the chances were very unlikely due to a new chipset being released and the upcoming socket 2011 and AM3+ boards. This was before the recall.
P67 is mainstream; I expect their boards to go up to UD9 when socket 2011 and AM3+ are more wide spread.
As it is, they already have an awesome selection of P67 boards, and all that is really required is further updates to their BIOS and perhaps full integration of UEFI for their P67 boards to be set for the long run.
On a side note, if you want SSD caching with a P67 board, you can buy something from Silverstone which will do it.
I'm so glad Gigabyte got rid of their baby blue/white color scheme.
I dunno, I kind of liked the relatively light colors. They're easier on the eyes than the angry red/black combo that often characterizes srs performance boards.

Which is why I'm glad they went with black on black. So much win :/ Black goes with everything.
I'm pretty sure Z68 either never had the problem in the first place, or it was early enough during production to address the issue without any major setback.
It was stated when Intel issued the recall that the Z68 chipset would be unaffected.
, I was kind of hanging out for that, perhaps now they will release their high end board straight away? Instead of close to the release of the next socket release.
I like how they made the heatsink on the bottom right a lot bigger than what is currently typical on the P67 boards. I got no beef with that, since my components in the summer can get pretty toasty.
