GTX560 Ti vs. 6950 2GB

Thread Starter
Anyone have some bench comparisons?

I need to know which will function and serve as a better component in my sig rig! Power consumption? What's this whole deal with the drivers lately?
I hear the ATI card can bios flash to the next tier?

I've also read something along the lines of "use ati with your gigabyte board, AMD plays better with AMD"

I would be getting the twin frozr msi 560 or the regular sapphire 6950 (don't particularly care for the reference but the unlockable is quite tempting)

Here is how they perform. The 6950 can be unlocked to a 6970 and the majority of these will unlock, reference, non-reference or 1GB doesn't matter as they all use pretty much the same core. But you should still be careful which you buy because companies like XFX are using their own versions of the PCB which is pretty cheap compared to Sapphire or PowerColor (again depends on model).

AMD card on AMD motherboard or NVIDIA on AMD/Intel doesn't matter.. nothing special will happen, so don't take in any of that bs.

The 560 TFII is good, I assume you would be buying from newegg. The MSI 560 Ti is $230 after rebates, and a reference HIS 6950 is $245 after rebates. There is a high probability it will unlock the extra shaders but it may not be able to run at 6970 speeds (the core may but the memory may run slower although many 6950s can run beyond 1375MHz memory speed).

Just go with whichever you prefer. Both are good choices and great cards.

Here's a link to the GTX560Ti vs 6950 1GB. The 6950 2GB is also included in the review btw.
http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-6950-1gb-vs-geforce-gtx-560-ti-review/
6950 1GB slightly edges out the 560 but it's a really close call. I'd pick the 2GB ref though, very good chance of it unlocking to a 6970.

can you provide any links to show a 6950 1GB unlocking?
can you provide any links to show a non reference card unlocking?
I have seen nothing but contrary opinions and links to these two statements.

1GB cards have unlocked, the TPU review on the 6950 1GB confirms it for example, though I would recommend the 2GB as it's only $10-$15 more in most cases, and various non-ref 2GB cards (presuming they are using the revision 2 "reference" PCB (has white outlines and stuff around components for example) also unlock and have the BIOS switches.
Others would also unlock but may lack the switch. Various users are reporting unlocks on forums with non-ref cards (I know Sapphire for sure because a mate has one).

I would get a 1GB and a non-ref 2GB to test but I can't yet so maybe I'll take a look into that sometime. I guess just my word may not be much but you can search about on XS, TPU, Guru3D etc.

Sorry but I haven't even heard of 1GB 6950 unlocks at all, period. But why skimp out on a 1GB card that will choke at high resolutions? For a few bucks more you get a 2GB model that is almost guaranteed to unlock (key word is almost).

6950~560
6970~570
So obviously a 6970 > 560. If both cards are in the same price range, why bother with the 560?
Right now the 560 and 570 are utterly useless buys unless you NEED something from the nvidia card like PhysX or something. The unlocked 6950 is the ultimate price/performance king right now, undisputed.

I am clearly bias, but the bias is backed this time smile.gif

Get a reference design 6950, it will more then likely unlock. It's just like the 6970 when unlocked.

Actually, 1GB vs 2GB doesn't make a difference, even at 1600p, and most people don't go higher than 1200 and don't run 3 screens so what does it matter?.. Though I agree the 2GB would be a better buy because they are more likely to hold the bios switch which is a neat fail-safe feature and I guess they would have higher resale value in the end, and 1GBs do unlock.

As for value, it really depends. If the 560 Ti was cheaper by say $40 or something then it would be a better buy, but it's not. Here in the UK for example they are almost the same price, the GTX 560 roughly £10 less but those are the crappy ones and the 6950s are reference/2GB so they would unlock, it all depends on region and pricing on the end.

The 570 is also a good card, in the US it has a fair price but in the UK it's more than a 6970 which really doesn't make sense considering their performance is pretty close most of the time and that GTX 480s are a lot less.
