Arggh! e8400 to 4.0GHz?

post #1 of 14
Thread Starter
Hey everyone,

I am starting to get rather annoyed with my pc for not letting me go past the stock speed on my e8400. I didn't buy this cpu for nothing and would like to see it reach 4ghz while my ram is at 1066mhz 5-5-5-15. However, i am starting to think that with my mobo, it just isn't possible. Ive messed with timings and speeds and bios revisions and voltages. She wont go past 333mhz. Ive seen this pc do 3.6ghz, but that was with a stick of non-overclocked ram.

Geez.

Any ideas?
Thanks! jake

O_o?!
Well downclock the ram and up the fsb and volts. trust me ram speeds doesnot matter alot in games.
When u reach ur goal try different ram speeds.
Cpu vcore <1.45 and kep the temps under 75 full load.

ok. heres what i know. the first time i did it i set my
fsb to 1.4v,
cpu to 1.4,
mem to 2.0,
ram @ 800mhz,
timings to 5-6-6-18,
and my cpu maxed out at a whopping 333mhz. yes, thats right. it would not post past 333 mhz. (stock speed)

so, then i tried this:
ram to auto (pc2-5700),
ram volts at auto (1.8),
fsb at 1.4,
cpu volts at auto (1.168),
and i got all the way to 388 mhz (3.5ghz) before it wouldnt post. I got artifacts in bios at 3.6 mhz, but went away after.

any ideas??

I'm not familiar wth your Mobo, but 1.4v for FSB seems a bit high for your FSB speed. Can you try 1.3v?

start over reset your cmos
put everything on auto
now what does your memory say for timming and volgate and set it to that.
now cpu try 1.36v
unlock fsb set to 2.00
set cpu to 400
never had your mobo so go from there

with my p5q i have my e8400 stable @ 4.140 ghz

Vcore = 1.4 in bios
Vcore idle cpuz (with droop) - 1.384
vcore under load cpuz (with droop) - 1.392
multi = 460
Northbridge = 1.2v

g-skill pc2-8500 @ 1102 mhz - 2.14 v (had to go to 2.14 to be stable, 2.1 wasnt cutting it)

Hope this can help you somewhat.

I don't understand why everyone is calling Vdrop, "vdroop". It was a stupid typo somewhere and now everyone have picked up on it.

I doubt you'll get to 4ghz on a mobo with a 975x chipset.
