Open a GTX 285

Thread Starter
So lately, something's been giving off a burning smell out of my computer, and I haven't been able to track it down. Ruled out the power supply, and now want to take a look at the video card to see if that's the problem.

I'd like to take the cover off and look inside, but from what I can tell from how-to's about it, in order to get the cover off, the fan and heatsink and everything have to come off too. I'm not planning on replacing all that or anything - I just want to visually check the insides of the card and see if anything's wrong. Is it possible to take just the cover off, without pulling fan & heatsink off as well?

when you pull that fan/thermal plate the pads plus tim should be replaced as they will be damaged from removing the cooler. Sometimes the pads will be ok to keep, but most definitely the TIM. it is most likely a lot of dust build up on components that heat up, cpu, gpu, psu,
