Well, I found out why my old motherboard smelled like fire

So myself and a friend have been working on getting my previous gaming rig to work in a ghetto setup since we have no case and things of that nature.

So as we finished the project, my friend noticed a burn mark on the motherboard.

STORY TIME: Before my SB build I had another build, it was an AM3 build. It served me well. However, one night I was playing TF2 and my computer shut off and I smelled a very strong burning smell. I opened up my rig and found no damage, but apparently I missed it. Either way, I thought the PSU was the problem, but eventually ruled that out. Then I thought about it, my MOBO since it was low-end"ish" had no heatsinks on the VRMs, so I bought some heatsinks and put them on. After I put the heatsinks on, it never happened again after that point.

TL;DR - As we were about to finalize the "ghetto" setup, my friend noticed this:

I was pretty shocked that I missed that, but also really happy that I eventually found what caused that smell.

As you can see, whatever that is is completely melted. What is that?

I know VERY little about mobos so this might be utterly wrong, posting as no1 else has replied yet.

Since you seem to have had the mobo boot up afterwards it might just be for the USB ports close by. Maybe you had a power surge through the USB? Does the external USB ports still function?

Looks like a miscellaneous board MOSFET took the blow

Isn't it important to figure out what it controls? If its for the USB it would just cause the USB not to work right? But if its something serious the whole board could be at risk, no?

I thought you were the expert xd, enlighten us tongue.gif

It has been working for for half a year since that occurred, I don't think it was anything of extreme importance.

Ok, then maybe you should check the external USB. Perhaps all you did was blow a mosfet required by those close by USB ports. If thats the case, should be no biggie.

Use macro mode on your camera and get a nice close up pic of the carnage.

Sucks your project board got burnt, surely another one will pop up for cheap.

Wanna sell me those vrm heatsinks cheap? wink.gif

Something just hit me, how many usb items were you using? The burnt IC could maybe have been a vrm for the usb or firewire headers. Whatever the headers are that are next to it.

It IS usb headers next to it... and I've been saying that from Post #2. Test some USB devices in your external USB ports. And make sure to test both mobo USB ports near the damaged spot.
